Shwmae, croeso, I will not give up. No, it wasn’t a keystroke – it was Welsh. The language of my fathers country and the usual language, yes, you guessed it, Welsh accent. Wales is a country famous for its rolling hills, male choirs, poetry, and confusing road signs.

What he is not known for is, in particular, his representation in video games. Sure, you can create a country in Crusader Kings 3 and create an empire of Welsh speakers, but you won’t often hear the rhythmic, melodious valleys accents when you start the next AAA game. This does not mean, however, that gaming is completely devoid of Welsh; we have five here – and one of them is from Wales. How exciting.

5 Nia (Xenoblade Chronicles 2)

It is physically impossible not to break the biggest smile when you hear “MOOOOOORNEN” after resting. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has made a bold, no, pivotal choice to give all Gormotti a thick Welsh twist. This may interest you : Rick and Morty’s strange relationship with video games is explained. It’s really not to be missed – the early hours of the game will bombard you with lyrical, melodic tones reminiscent of the valleys of Wales.

Nia, however, is a unique example. I don’t remember many of the main characters in video games with a heavy accent like hers. In a world where Los Angeles voice actors give everyone the perfect American accent, Xenoblade Chronicles invariably proves it is a breath of fresh air.

4 Sabine (Fable 3)

It may surprise you to learn that this character is played by Sir Ben Kingsley. No one will guess what made him opt for such a brilliant accent, but it certainly works for Sabine. See the article : Neon White wouldn’t be “weird” without Machine Girl music. He is king of the Inhabitants, the people of the uttermost parts of Albion, and he hates the tyrant Logan with all his might.

The parallels between the historic rivalry between the Kingdom of Wales and the Kingdom of Tyranny of England and the animosity between Sabine and Logan cannot be denied, and he is sure to impress as your first true ally with any force. Fable 3 was a great game anyway, but I think this addon only raises it up a bit.

3 Edward Kenway (Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag)

You may have to listen to this because it’s a little weak, but yeah – Edward Kenway, the pirate killer at the helm of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, is Welsh. There are other Welsh accents in this game too, and it makes sense – back in those days, Wales had a lot of exports, and one of them was seamen. Edward being Welsh also makes sense from a practical point of view. It’s obvious that his amazing fistfighting talent was born and developed in the streets of Swansea, possibly on a Friday night after a few too many beers. Times change, but not that much.

2 Drippy (Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch)

It is blindingly obvious that whoever localized this game was a master of both Welsh accent and dialect. Drippy acts as your mentor and guide to the fairy-tale world of Ni No Kuni, and he does it with loads of “muns”, “boots” and “noras flips”.

In fact, one of the absolute highlights of this game is getting to the home of Drippy – Fairyground. You quickly realize that, just like in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a Welsh accent has been given to the entire race. Every fairy in the game speaks with a Welsh accent, fondly drenched in dialogue – even unspoken dialogue!

1 Nancy Jones (Planet Zoo)

Okay, I think this is an episode. It turns out there aren’t many video game characters with a Welsh accent in the gaming world.

However, Nancy stood out for me as one of the guides through the extensive tutorial levels of Planet Zoo. As always, it’s refreshing to have an accent that you don’t often hear in a context so often attributed to the stuffy RP and LA accents.

Nancy looks great in career mode – she has a fun banter with Bernard Goodwin and of course she knows her stuff – which is nice considering that the closest thing Wales has to a zoo is a place called Folly Farm which is exactly like that just as exciting as it Sounds.
