Thirty-one Detroit subway artists will share $ 550,000 in the Kresge Artist Fellowships and Gilda Emerging Artist Awards. The awards were announced today by the Kresge Arts office in Detroit located at the College for Creative Studies, which manages the organization on behalf of the Kresge Foundation.

The 14th group of award winners consists of 15 Kresge Artist Fellowships in Film & amp; Music and 5 Kresge Artist Fellowships in Live Arts (which includes one collaborating duo), as well as 7 Guild Award winners in Film & amp; Music and 3 in Live Arts. (For the first time, both the Fellowships and Gilda Awards were split between two categories – Live Art and Film & Music – based on the number of entries received in each category, not 10 awards in each.)

Since 2008, Kresge Arts in Detroit has awarded more than $ 7.36 million directly to artists from three counties (Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb) through 14 Kresge Eminent Artist Awards ($ 50,000 each), $ 258 Kresge Artist Fellowships ($ 25,000 each) ), and 25,000 Gil. Prizes ($ 5,000 each).

“The grand discovery of the one-year winners of the Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Awards has become something like a summer ceremony in Detroit. Many of us find confirmation of the artists on our radar screen – and more importantly, we’ve met many new artists who are leaving their mark on vibrant city art and cultural scenes, ”said Kresge President and CEO Rip Rapson.

“These are 31 artists we can look forward to seeing, hearing and experiencing in the months and years to come thanks to this program that supports and elevates artists individually. But at least it is equally important that these artists remind us of the collective contribution of our artistic community to a sense of our cultural roots and our future possibilities. ”

The 2022 cohort ranges from rising practitioners to celebrated veterans. Selection criteria for Kresge Artist Fellowships include a proven history of artistic achievement and high-quality work, potential for growth and advancement in an artistic career, and potential to reflect, enhance, or impact communities within metropolitan Detroit. Award winners are selected by panels of local and national practicing artists, in their respective disciplines, over several months and numerous rounds of review (see full list of panelists below).

“This year’s powerful group of creatives from Detroit reflects dynamic innovation, historical memory and the importance of creating transformative spiritual experiences,” said the image maker, cultural curator, activist and 2022 Film & Music panelist Piper Carter. “With a commitment to community, the Kresge Artist Fellowships and Gilda Awards recognize the advancement of artistic craft and purposeful ideas needed in and for our world at this time.”

Along with a no-strings-attached $25,000 award, Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients receive a customized professional development experience that provides skill-building, networking, promotion and coaching opportunities. Produced by Detroit-based Kresge Arts, the offerings are created and delivered in collaboration with artists and arts and cultural organizations representing local and national

perspectives. Within the catalog of offerings, fellows are encouraged to determine what best fits their goals and definitions of success. Gilda Award winners are invited to participate in most professional development opportunities.

Kresge Arts in Detroit will also continue its commissioned film series, which connects Fellows with local filmmakers to create broad, interpretive film short films depicting Fellows ’artistic practices. Short videos of individual artists are available online at KresgeArtsinDetroit.org and Vimeo. The 2021 films premiered on Detroit Public Television – on TV and online – and are now circulating through film festivals and artists ’websites. The 2022 films will be online next spring.

“Creativity is an essential component of society locally, nationally and globally and our world needs the transformative power of art, now more than ever,” said College of Creative Studies President Don Tuski. “Paying tribute and investing in this group of Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award winners ensures the ongoing contribution of these artists to our cultural community and beyond, and that is why CCS could not be more proud.”
