The fellowship grants were awarded to Doug Barrett, Halley Cotton, Ryan Meyer and Elisabeth Pellathy, who may have been made by Alabama Legislation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Fellowship winners are Doug Barrett, associate professor of graphic design, Elisabeth Pellathy, associate professor of new media, and Ryan Meyer, new assistant professor of digital media and graphic design in the Department of Art and Art History at the College of Arts and Arts. ASCA Fellowships are awarded to individuals working in arts education, dance, design, media / photography, music, literature, theater, visual arts and crafts. These grants recognize artistic excellence as well as professional commitment and maturity, contributing to the further development of the artist. Fellows use funding to support the growth and development of their artistic careers by creating time, practicing and improving their skills, pursuing professional development and training, or by providing other opportunities for Alabama artists to achieve this.

Halley Cotton “Alabama’s creative sector benefits immensely from the incredible work of our artists and arts educators,” said Council Chairman Henry Panion III, Ph.D. “We are delighted to be able to provide support directly to individuals in the form of these members.”

Barrett is an avid collector of images, awarded a design fellowship, and often stops at the side of the road to document unusual signs and handmade nature. Barrett’s interest in the exploration and interpretation of text and imagery is found in a way that speaks of the built space connected with his belief that graphic design has a cultural impact on our lives. He received a Sappi Ideas That Matter Grant in 2012 for the production of a booklet for the Kabba River Society and was awarded the UAB President ‘s Award for Excellence in Teaching in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Cotton, who has been awarded a literary arts fellowship in poetry, is managing editor of the Birmingham Poetry Review, and production manager of NELLE. As founding director of the SPARK Writing Festival, she focuses on community development through creative writing workshops. Her scholarship and her writing are about the relationship between people and the land and how both are nurtured or destroyed through balance and inequality. Cotton will use the funds for a poetry exploration and photojournalism of the entire length of the Cahaba.

Ryan MeyerMeyer, who was awarded a media / photography fellowship, received his BFA degree from UAB and his MFA degree from the University of California, Davis. He is an exhibition member of the Ground Floor Contemporary Gallery in Birmingham and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Meyer says it was built between the suburban Deep South and the road. His practice of art is a response to the effect of technological advances on the mind, body and environment. Meyer has over a decade of experience in the commercial arts, specializing in creativity, branding and storytelling. He has worked with large institutions, small start-ups, international products and local non-profits. Some of these brands include Shipt, Mannington Floors and America’s First Federal Credit Union.

Pellathy, who has been awarded a craft fellowship, works in a variety of media, responding to venues, history and social context. Her work has been exhibited at the Gadsden Museum of Art and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art in Alabama; Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice, Italy; Booth Museum and Royal Pavilion and Museums in the UK; and the Alfred Museum of Ceramic Art, the Peale Center for the History and Architecture of Baltimore, Currents New Media, and the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, all in the United States.

Elisabeth Pellathy The Arts Council is the official state agency for supporting and developing the arts in Alabama. The council works to expand and preserve the state ‘s cultural resources by supporting non – profit arts organizations, schools, colleges, local government units and individual artists. Arts programs, aided by council grants, have a track record of improving community development, education, cultural tourism and the overall quality of life in all regions of the state. Grants from the Alabama State Council for the Arts are made possible by an annual appropriation from Alabama Legislation and additional funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
