CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Leaders of the city of Charleston and Kanawha County announced a draft plan Wednesday to build the largest indoor sports complex in West Virginia.

Major sports complex project coming to Charleston

“One of the biggest requests we get is activities for families, recreation, things to do, and we’re going to deliver today,” Kanawha County Commissioner Ben Salango said.

“The number one thing that people have told me constantly, being mayor for the last three and a half years, the number one thing – invest in our youth,” said Mayor Amy Goodwin. “Well, today we will.”

The Capital Sports Center, which has the capacity to host major regional and national events, will be the largest sports complex in West Virginia and one of the largest in the eastern United States, leaders say.

On Wednesday, Commissioner Salango and Mayor Goodwin highlighted key findings from a sports tourism study by The Huddle Up Group for the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau (CCVB), which show the economic impact that sports tourism can have on a region and the Necessity of a single indoor. Officials predict the complex will be a draw for youth sports and revenue for the city and county.

The CCVB, with funds received through ARPA funds from the City of Charleston, contracted with The Huddle Up Group to conduct an audit of the CCVB’s current sports tourism work and an analysis of the area’s sporting venues.
