UVA is a finalist for Elijah Gertrude’s 6’3″ combo guard commitment (Jersey City, NJ)
Virginia is a finalist for another top target in the 2023 recruiting class. Elijah Gertrude, a 6’3″ combo keeper from Jersey City, New Jersey, announced the top five of Seton Hall, St. John’s, Kansas, Virginia, and Rutger on Saturday.
Gertrude is rated three-star at 247Sports and Rivals but is a four-star prospect according to On3. 247Sports ranks Gertrude as the No. 136 in the country, guard combo No. 21 in the class of 2023, and prospect No. 8 in New Jersey. Gertrude is a top 150 consensus player in her recruiting class across major hiring services.
Gertrude’s announcement of the top five comes just a week after she made an official visit to UVA.
“The visit to Virginia was great, actually good,” Gertrude told Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog. “Their message was Coach Bennett felt I was a great defender and I could take that defensive effort to another level… He felt I was very skilled in attack and we could work on a few things. Coach Bennett feels he can improve me offensively and defensively he can make me a lot better.”
St. John’s also hosted Gertrude on an official visit, while Seton Hall and Rutgers invited her to campus for an informal visit. The other finalist, Kansas, is yet to host Gertrude. According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Gertrude intends to announce her college decision by the end of September. With UVA having just hosted Gertrude, the Cavaliers are certainly considered one of the favorites to land his commitment when he announces it next month.
The Cavaliers are seeking their second commitment in the 2023 class to accompany Blake Buchanan, the Idaho No. 1, who announced his commitment to Virginia on July 3.
