When was the last time someone was seen browsing the pages of a real phone book?
The answer to this question has concerns companies like Workbook and Le Book. In the past, these companies that list and promote the creators of the fashion industry were pioneers, their catalogs had hundreds of pages and were a must-have for any creative director, stylist or producer. But since the internet emerged, the acquisition of creative talent has changed radically. There are many ways to do this now, and most of them live online.
On Wednesday evening in Berlin, Fabien Duverneuil, one of the founders of Le Book, launched in 1982, presented a solution to his company’s digital challenge.
Le Book will join the Ubooker online model booking platform as part of a strategic partnership where the original catalog, which is described as the “bible of the image industry”, will take its large creative catalog online. From this fall, potential customers will be able to browse and book photographers, illustrators, make-up artists and more via the Ubooker platform.
The venture between the two companies will be known as “Creatives by Le Book – powered by Ubooker”.
“Le Book was born 45 years ago,” Duverneuil WWD said in an exclusive interview shortly before the venture was released. “Digitization was inevitable. Obviously it was a difficult process and we just launched the new Le Book website… But we will always love printing so we are glad to be able to do both now. ”
Le Book still publishes paper catalogs annually in four markets – Berlin, New York, London and Paris – but since 2005 it has also focused on hosting dozens of personal networking events for creators. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company had to take the digital ones.
It was at the first of these digital summits that Duverneuil met the founders of Ubooker.
A site that uses the slogan “by models, for models” has been described as a kind of “Uber” modeling because while all the talents on the platform are validated, Ubooker bypasses agencies and offers automatic invoicing, faster payouts and lower commissions. Originally, the Ubooker, which was founded in 2017 and is based in London, was aimed at larger e-commerce companies, some of which book up to 30 models a day to film their product. Ubooker has made this process easier and faster.
Speaking to Duverneuil at one of Connections’ digital events, the synergy between the two companies became clear, said WWD Nicola Scagnolari, CEO and co-founder of Ubooker.
“Ubooker can bring his [online] knowledge to help discover and reserve career talent,” explained Scagnolari. “It made sense as our technology is easily adaptable to the adjacent market segment.”
Scagnolari admitted that Ubooker may have started listing photographers and other creators themselves, but “Le Book has over 40 years of industry experience and know-how. It felt like a natural fit. “
“Our organizations continue to focus on our expertise,” added Duverneuil. “Marketing and networking from Le Book and technology and innovation from Ubooker in a mutually beneficial relationship.”
Asked if he thought some agencies might find Le Book’s online transition to a platform like Ubooker, which effectively cuts the middleman, as problematic, Duverneuil rejected the idea.
“This may be viewed as controversial, but of course it does not have to be,” he argued. “Our goal is to involve our partners – clients and creators as well as agencies – in this development, to learn from them and offer them new opportunities to develop their talents.”
