Elliot Wilkinson-Ray started Ripton and Co. in 2019 from his bedroom at the Skier Chalet in Aspen, selling his high-tech denim activewear online through Shopify. But as the COVID-19 pandemic hit many retailers hard — and Wilkinson-Ray himself pulled through with plenty of help from his friends — his concept of jorts took off and continues to grow.
Ripton products are 80% denim, designed to conform to the body of the wearer while moving with an athlete. “I think Vermont and Colorado are both very outdoorsy cultures and lifestyles,” he said. “And I also think Vermonters are very low-key people, good people with strong values. I noticed they didn’t own the most clothes – ironic because now I own a clothing company – and that’s why I focused on jorts.
When developing his apparel, Wilkinson-Ray kept in mind trends he had already seen working outdoors, from Carhartts to ski fashion: something that could be worn hiking in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado or the Appalachian trails – nothing fancy – but simple and durable for the activity at hand. The casual look makes sense to him because after all, it’s what he grew up with, he said. Vermont winters meant kids skied the slopes in jeans or Carhartts.
“There’s this kind of rambling ruggedness that comes out of the Ripton brand for people,” he said. “Trying to create things out of something like denim felt like turning the narrative of outdoor clothing upside down. It’s not meant to be taken too seriously, but at the same time we use a lot of technology new and interesting things that do something like denim to make our clothes more comfortable – and I think that’s where our design principles lie.

Speaking about his business, Wilkinson-Ray acknowledges how proud he is of where he is now, but he’s very grateful for how it all started. He spoke about the early stages of Ripton and Co., and how through the pandemic he was able to build important professional relationships and networks.
“COVID helped me in the sense that I was lost, living in Aspen and working a few different jobs, and those all came to an end. Everything stopped. I think it helped the very infant stage of the business to move forward a bit more. I’m proud of that awkward phase where I didn’t think people were taking [Ripton] very seriously,” he said.
This gratitude is especially directed to the Aspen Valley and Roaring Fork, which provided its first customers. Friends and acquaintances have all contributed to the company by buying items or sending money before the items are released so that he can buy the first fabric.
“Everyone came together and helped with seed funding in this first round, like you would in a Kickstarter,” he said. “I’m proud of it because it felt so natural and people were paying big bucks for a pair of jorts back then.
