Tampa-based Caspers announced Monday that it plans to sell all of its McDonald’s locations and franchises on Oct. 1, according to a news release.
The Caspers Company has owned and operated McDonald’s locations in Tampa since 1958 and is considered the largest franchise in Florida. Fritz Casper opened the state’s first McDonald’s on South Dale Mabry Freeway after meeting Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s, at a department store in Chicago, according to the release. Since then, three generations of the Casper family have run a network of franchises of fast food chains in the region.
Blake Casper and Allison Casper Adams could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon. Other details of the sale have not been released.
The family owns 60 McDonald’s stores, 51 in Tampa Bay and nine in Jacksonville, said Dustin Portillo, a spokesman for Caspers. Local stores include McDonald’s at Tampa General Hospital.
“(Blake and Allison) just felt the time was right to get out of the McDonald’s world and sell off their stores and start a new chapter,” Portillo said. “We respect our past and reimagine our future.”
Casper and Adams founded Oxford Exchange, a Tampa venue that houses a restaurant, bookstore, gift shop, coworking space and design studio in 2012. They recently opened Library, a restaurant on the campus of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg in 2018. Under the hospitality company Oxford The Commons also own and operate the Current Hotel, the Marriott Autograph Hotel in Rocky Point and the Stovall House.
They plan to open Predalina, a Mediterranean seafood restaurant on Water Street in 2023, Portillo said. The family is also an investor in Riverside Recovery, a drug and alcohol center in Hillsborough County, he said.
