ReFED has added Capital Tracker to its collection of online tools for generating data-driven solutions to food waste. The service allows users to track data on capital investments to reduce food waste from 2012 onwards.

ReFED developed Capital Tracker with financiers and solution providers in mind, but the tool is open to the public and free to use. Alejandro Enamorado, Capital, Innovation & An Engagement Manager at ReFED, he tells Food Tank, “it can be used by anyone interested in understanding the food waste funding landscape.”

“In order to develop an effective financing strategy, financiers and solution providers need data,” says Enamorado. He says this includes “what types of solutions have seen the most investment, which funders are most active in the space, which solution providers offer similar products.” Capital Tracker displays this information and other data through interactive graphs and charts. Users can find investor and recipient contact information or display filters, selecting details such as investment amount or solution type.

Capital Tracker was launched with private equity data from PitchBook. But over time, Enamorado says, “[ReFED] will update the Capital Tracker to include data on public and philanthropic investments to provide a more complete picture of food waste financing. The data will come from the US IRS and US Office of Management and Budget Form 990-PF.” ReFED expects to add these updates throughout the year and plans to do general updates weekly. The tool also offers a survey link so users can provide feedback to improve future displays.

“Over the past ten years, funding for food waste solutions has accelerated, with the number and size of contracts increasing,” Enamorado tells Food Tank. In 2021, US$2 billion has been invested in strategies to reduce food waste through 173 agreements. Most of these funds were aimed at preventing food waste.

ReFED aims to reduce food waste in the US by 50 percent by 2030. For this to happen, investments must lead to results. Enamorado views their perspective favorably. “While we still have a long way to go in terms of meeting our food waste reduction goals,” he tells Food Tank, “we’re starting to see progress… [and] we’re excited about what we’re seeing.”
