Most video games contain non-player characters to some degree, whether to impede players, give them important items, or simply provide exposition. With open-world games becoming more and more popular, NPCs become even more important to games.

However, not all NPCs exist solely to serve the player, and some games like the recent LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga program in truly hilarious conversations they can have even without any input from the player. These NPCs have some of the funniest dialogue in their games.

11 What's For Dinner? (World of Warcraft)

With a game as massive as World of Warcraft, there are likely dozens, if not hundreds, of interactions that players may never encounter. See the article : ADHD and video games: What the research says. However, if players hang out with Admiral Odesyus long enough, they can hear one of the best exchanges in the entire game.

Odesyus asks his cook, “Cookie”, what he is cooking for dinner, he warns that it better not be his usual staple of chicken anymore. Cookie tells the Admiral about the scrumptious multi-course meal he has planned, much to the Admiral’s amazement, before laughing “not really, it’ll be chicken”, then pulling one to hammer the point. The Admiral may not be happy, but everyone who heard this exchange was.

10 Scary Smart (Transformers: Fall of Cybertron)

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron has a surprisingly great storyline. Not only does this generate effective emotional moments, but it also fits into some good jokes. On the same subject : Steven Spielberg is ‘a true gamer’, says ‘Halo’ producer Kiki Wolfkill (exclusive). Cliffjumper and Jazz’s dialogue in their levels is already great, but they can also hear a fun exchange between two Decepticons.

The Decepticons discuss their scientist Shockwave and the merits of his experiments. One of the Decepticons describes Shockwave as “scary smart” and is told that compared to himself, everyone else is smart and scary. He quickly proves his partner’s point by saying he doesn’t understand, which triggers an “I didn’t think you would.” Not only do players hear this great insult, but they can also witness its perfect win.

9 The Mind of a Child (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt)

Geralt can encounter all kinds of people and creatures throughout The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, with many strange stories to tell. One of the funniest of these tales comes from a group of young children. To see also : Video games with the worst user scores on Metacritic. Players can bump into the boys in one of the towns, discussing something they heard from their parents.

One of the boys asks the older boy what a prostitute does, and he replies that his father says they do things his mother doesn’t want. The boys, still young and innocent, understand this to mean the various household chores their mothers dislike doing and simply agree that “adults are weird”. Hearing the children’s innocent conclusions was hopefully the pick-me-up Geralt needed.

8 The Lemon Rant (Portal 2)

8 The Lemon Rant (Portal 2)

Portal 2 is legendary for its impeccable script and sense of humor, and nothing sums that up better than Cave Johnson’s famous lemon rant. Cave Johnson drops plenty of hilarious lines throughout the game, but his take on “when life gives you lemons” is in a category of its own.

He berates the players through the recording not to make lemonade, but to get life back on the lemons. He even threatens to build an incendiary lemon to burn down the house of life while GLaDOS encourages him. The absurdity of the speech mixed with J.K. Simmons’ fiery delivery made it one of the most enduring moments in the entire game.

7 J. Jonah Jameson’s Hotline (Spider-Man: Miles Morales)

7 J. Jonah Jameson's Hotline (Spider-Man: Miles Morales)

Despite some unpopular opinions of Sony’s Spider-Man games on Reddit, the series took a fun new take on the character of J. Jonah Jameson, making him the host of a radio show that players can catch snippets of. throughout the game. One of the best of these occurs in Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

One of the recurring mission types involves shutting down the dangerous Roxxon Laboratories, during which Jameson will take to the airwaves in defense of Roxxon, asking people what they would do if a man in a tight suit broke into their home. He almost immediately realizes his mistake, cutting the phone lines and ending the show with “You’re sick”. As fun as the answers are, it’s almost even more fun to leave them to the player’s imagination.

6 A Raider Legend (Fallout 4)

Like World of Warcraft, Fallout 4 is packed with great NPC dialogue that players may completely miss in the vast open world, including this gem of a multi-raider party story. Heard by at least two different groups, they tell the story of a brave and heavily armed man.

Looters say the man threw grenades, fired machine guns and fled on a motorbike, but in the end they reveal he was actually acting out everything and making all the noises with his mouth . The best part is that it works, as the raiders were too stunned to fight back. From a fearless warrior to a master ventriloquist, history has left many Fallout players wishing they could meet this mysterious man in person.

5 Mind Reading (Halo Series)

First-person shooters are often not known for their interactions with NPCs, but Halo games host several great lines of enemies and allies. When accompanied by the Marines who often join Master Chief on missions, players can hear many interesting quotes from them.

Among the best of these quotes is a Marine who claims to be able to read minds. If players stare at him long enough, he’ll pretend there’s nothing in their minds to read and beg them to think of something. Alternatively, sometimes he’ll also tell the leader that what he’s thinking right now is “just…disagree”. Both lines are great punchlines and beg the question of what, exactly, if anything, is going on in Master Chief’s head.

4 Anti-Ninja Floor (Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory)

Sam Fisher from the Splinter Cell series isn’t technically a ninja, but since Splinter Cell is considered one of the best stealth action games of all time, it might as well be considered one. This leads to a surprisingly funny moment during a mission in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. While undercover, Fisher comes across two guards discussing the noise from the ground.

One of the men claims it is an “anti-ninja floor”, meant to detect any ninja trying to sneak up on it. The two argue over whether the ninjas are real and eventually agree to switch patrols so the ninja-believer can stay on the loud floor. Better yet, if Sam catches the man, he’ll be more excited than scared by the honor of being killed by a ninja.

3 Mom On Prom Night (Batman: Arkham City)

Most of the random conversations Batman may hear from goons in the Batman: Arkham series are entertaining, from one man complaining that he’s never seen Batman to another fantasizing about Mr. Freeze’s frozen wife, but few can compare to the randomness of a conversation near the start of Arkham City.

Batman encounters a group of henchmen, one of whom proclaims that Batman will never come inside, as the place is “closer than my mother on prom night”. After heavy questioning from his associates, the man finally reveals that his mother had in fact committed heinous crimes on prom night, quite a far cry from the conclusions they had jumped to. The throwaway line is already funny, but the plot twist adds an even bigger layer.

2 Isaac Newton (Mass Effect 2)

The Mass Effect series is full of phenomenal NPCs. Most of them have great dialogue as well, in the original game’s lifts to Andromeda’s Nomad. One of the best conversations players can hear is a pep talk from a soldier about the Citadel in Mass Effect 2.

The soldier begins by lecturing his troops on the payloads of various bombs, before embarking on arguably the most passionate physics lesson ever given. After calling Isaac Newton “The Deadliest SOB in Space”, he forces a soldier to quote Newton’s Laws verbatim, leaving recruits both invigorated and educated. It’s a lecture that might even rival Shepard’s famous speeches.
