BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – “We knew we were the team to win,” said German Levke Walczak at the head of his team ahead of the evening’s match.
Germany and the United States both entered the match on Tuesday afternoon without a win, as well as in the standings, but most experts gave the US a clear advantage. Two hours later, this hypothesis was reversed, as Germany beat the gold medal favorites, sometimes during a shameless match, on their way to an emphatic 13-10 victory. The victory ensures that he will finish at the top of Group A and ensures a place in the finals.
A perfect first point of attack for the US caused a clearing in the memory of their intermittently shaken bases in the match against Great Britain. Germany were considerably less comfortable to start with, but still held on to the decisive game of Nico Müller and Kyoko Binnewies. It seemed that the two polished offenses were set for the exchange of blows for most of the game.
This initial impression could not have been more false. The problem with the shooting game was just the beginning. Opi Payne fired a pass to follow the midfielder who was easily shot by Schlör. Freechild put a long inner forehand at Kaela Helton’s disposal. Claire Trop pushed Grant back beyond Lindsley’s field. Lindsley was unable to find a way to attack the hanging Trop forehand before ascending to Schlör in the end zone. Helton surpassed Payne’s wide range of explosives. Freechild shook it and threw a round of applause in front of the box. Finally, in the eighth possession of the point, he connected with Normile Lindsley from behind the midfield. Freechild, either in an effort to boost the team’s strength with a good troll, or in real confusion, after a long point: “This is a break!”
Germany held on to a 3-2 lead to keep up the pressure on the American attack. And then the wheels came out for the US. Jimmy Mickle rose to the line to take the position of power and put a forehand on Sarah Meckstroth. The shot had enough air underneath, but, Lena Trautmann was able to close the gap before it arrived. He made the perfect leap to get away from Meckstroth – one of the great defensive games he’s played in the early days of the World Cup competition. Trautmann initially disagreed with the possibility of the German coaches putting him on the D-line. “At first he didn’t like the idea so much,” coach Stefan Rekitt said. “But we promised he would be able to shine.”
Germany’s opponent was even more spectacular than the block. A high back blow took the wind and the sides began to drift as they reached the end zone. Walczack, who initially ran to a place where the huck could have landed in calm conditions, looked at the tail disc and changed directions for a high-stakes 15-meter sprint. amazed at its clarity.
The next point saw Trautmann’s design put Trop on the sidelines near the middle of the pitch, giving Germany another break. Marvin Waldvogel and Steffen Döscher took full advantage of the opportunity to put Lindsley and Nate Goff behind to score a free-kick from the line. They recovered from one of the breaks before half-time, but with so much more work to do, there was pressure to steer the ship. Fortunately for the United States, a bad half doesn’t change the fact that they have tremendous talent on their side, and they can always rely on that knowledge when things get tough. “We have that trust in each other … No one really feels like they have to put [the game] on their backs,” Meckstroth said.
In the second half the United States came out significantly sharper in attack, suddenly a deep game began to take their side. Goff single-handedly overtook Payne – who ended up with a high-point jump in the textbook under pressure – scored the second half for the Americans. Chris Kocher, who was silent in the first half, walked away from his match to break a Müller huck. He soon ended up with a book kick in a deep shot from Mickle.
“[Our attack] started to calm down a bit and we started to find a bit of a loophole,” Meckstroth said.
However, they could not move the impulse in their direction. Freechild’s poor run gave Germany a possession starting in the red zone, where Walczak opened the scoring for a quick lead. They then lost ground to the U.S., forcing a low shot against a German zone when initial attempts to systematically move the disc down the field were thwarted. Sebastian Spiegel threw a hammer into Katharina Schulze’s boat for a break.
But the US return attempt was far from over. Meckstroth and Mickle increased their defensive intensity two points later when Mickle flew near the goal line to block an inside shot. Kocher saw Meckstroth step by step and sent a long blow at him. Like Mickle in the power position in front of Mickle, he hung on a bit as he navigated down the field, which allowed him to catch Döscher and take a good defensive position. That didn’t matter to Meckstroth at all, though. He rolled over Döscher and pulled himself out of his head with a clear, unexpected sky where the stadium crowd became apoplexy.
Germany seemed to have overturned the record in a second great effort by Payne to block a blow to Walczak, but Walcza felt contact and hit a foul. They could not agree on who initiated the contact, and the disc was returned to the shooter in the disputed call. The error was cleared, with Germany holding on to an 11-8 lead.
The heroic games over mowing the grass brought the United States to a point. First, Meckstroth made another spectacular catch in the end zone, this time only to prevent Claire Chastain from hitting the ground. At the next point a poor shot from Germany allowed the Americans to get to the red zone. Freechild’s low back hand, an inch crossed from across the field, nearly ruined the chance to rest, but Trop slipped to his knees to save the property and flipped the record to bring Williams into a U.S. deficit.
But that’s all they would get. Müller, Walczak and Anna Gerner danced through the huge US defense to climb 12-10. At the last point, Trautmann’s defense went to the German break again. He closed the gap to Trop to force an early jump to lower the catch too early. “Everyone’s head always explodes [watching Trautmann play on defense] because it’s awesome … He keeps getting all d at every point. He turns on the whole team,” Walcza said. “It gives us all so much energy.” A simple break followed, Schlör to Spiegel, sealed the victory.
If the disintegration of Canada was a polite message that Germany had reached the world elite, the performance against the United States was a tremendous prediction from the rooftops. They matched the defensive energy of the Americans, and the attack was more compound in the leagues. They will surely threaten him with a medal, and perhaps even a victory at the World Games. “Obviously they’re a real deal,” U.S. coach Miranda Knowles said after the game.
