MONCTON, New Brunswick — The United States took care of business against Germany on Monday, while Canada earned a dramatic overtime win over Slovakia to set up the matchup many hoped to see at this tournament. It will be a matchup between the USA and Canada in the second of two semifinals at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET.
The natural rivals have been on similar journeys throughout the tournament, needing to overcome early tournament jitters to get back on track. Canada lost its opener to the Czech Republic, while the USA bowed out against Slovakia in its second game of the tournament. Those were the only losses both teams suffered to date.
Canada had their hands full with the same Slovakian team that beat the USA 6-3 in the preliminaries. After Canada jumped out to a 3-1 lead, Slovakia managed to tie the game with the tournament hosts midway through the third period. A hard-fought extra time ended with Connor Bedard, the tournament’s leading scorer by a significant margin, scoring the winning goal with a spectacular individual effort.
Now the USA and Canada will square off in the much-anticipated semifinals, which will be played in a raucous atmosphere in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the tournament’s primary venue.
Team USA spent all of their time at the secondary location of Moncton, but dealt with large partisan crowds rooting against them in almost every game. That said, they won’t see anything like what was shown in Halifax throughout the tournament.
The USA and Canada have not met in the semifinals since 2013 when Team USA won 5-1 en route to the gold medal in that tournament. Prior to that semifinal matchup, Canada had won four previous semifinal meetings, including an epic shootout in 2007 in which Jonathan Toews took over and won the game for Canada.
This will be the first WJC meeting in any round since the 2021 gold medal game, which the USA won 2-0 led by Trevor Zegras and Spencer Knight in Edmonton.
In the all-time series between the two teams at the World Junior Championships, Canada has won 33 of the 48 all-time meetings. There are also three connections. Despite the poor record, the USA has won six of the last nine meetings between the two teams at the World Junior Championship and each of the last three meetings in the playoff round.
