Friday’s attack on Paul Pelosi is an alarming reminder of the dangerous threats that elected officials and public figures face during today’s contentious political climate. After the shooting of Representative Gabby Giffords in 2011 and the shooting of Representative Steve Scalise in 2017, the United States Capitol Police (USCP) made security improvements. With the growing number of threats against elected officials, from city councilors to federal judges, our work to amplify our efforts to protect members of Congress becomes increasingly urgent.
The USCP has worked diligently to investigate reported threats, improve intelligence collection and analysis, and strengthen our partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the country to provide security for members when traveling outside of Washington, DC.
As of January 6, 2021, we have implemented a long list of improvements, including the addition of significant personnel to handle security in and around the US Capitol Complex. The Department is on track to meet our target of hiring around 280 directors by the end of the year. It takes almost a year to get recruits into the academy. While progress has been made, there is still much work to be done. The Department’s long-term plans to expand our protection operations are already underway – their importance only underscored by Friday’s brutal attack. We will continue to work with our Congressional partners to add additional agents and security enhancements to support our protective operations mission.
The USCP engaged in a review of Friday’s incident. We believe today’s political climate calls for more resources to provide additional layers of physical security for members of Congress. This plan would include an emphasis on adding redundancies to measures already in place for Congressional leadership. I hope you understand that we cannot divulge the details of these improvements because our country cannot afford to make life easier for would-be bad actors.
The assistance we receive from our partner agencies is crucial to ensuring the safety of Members of Congress while they are away from the US Capitol. The Department will continue to coordinate with state and local law enforcement agencies on member safety.
During this period of high political tension, we continue to monitor thousands of cases across the country in an effort to stop potential threats before they hit the headlines. During the last five years, about 12% of cases – where we have identified people making threats – have been prosecuted. We hope to see more of these cases prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
