Jeremy Butler grew up in south Chicago. As a Black man, he didn’t have perfect ideas about police. But as a student at Illinois State University, Butler met Aaron Woodruff, the head of the ISU police department.

“We just had a conversation about the police. And he felt I would be a good fit for law enforcement, ”Butler said of Woodruff. “So he talked to me with the idea of just thinking about it. And after a few conversations with him, I was in police school.”

Butler said he discussed with Woodruff the need for more representation in law enforcement to resolve broken relationships between small communities and police. After graduating from police school, Butler served for seven years in the ISU police department before leaving the field to pursue a Ph.D. in kinesiology.

Butler is now a professor at Judson University in Elgin. He is combining his knowledge of kinesiology and policing with more than 20 years of martial arts experience to develop more effective methods for law enforcement. He recently published a book called, “Stop Resisting: The Law Enforcement Officer’s Guide to Proven Control Tactics, Less Lawsuits, and Building Community Trust Through Martial Arts.”

Butler said police training often makes verbal abuse and corporal punishment separate issues. In Butler’s view, the two go together. Describing the interactions between citizens and police to lead to physical contact, Butler said, “I really feel that a lot of these encounters will start with verbal communication, and then they can move on. in the south. And so you have to have the body. So why not learn that together? ”

Butler sees the confidence and discipline that can be developed through martial arts as a way to counteract the unruly police interactions on the streets.

“A lot of times, we forget that police are people,” Butler said. “And, you know, mistakes happen when you get when conditions are chaotic and quickly improve.”

But by boosting police training and time on the mat in the martial arts gym, Butler believes officers can better prepare themselves for the worst situations. uncertain.

“As a professional, you have a responsibility to make sure you have enough training to prepare yourself for these situations so that we can reduce the number of mistakes that happen,” he said.

Butler will be in Bloomington on July 23 to lead a seminar for law enforcement in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
