PARIS (AP) – French lawmakers on Tuesday criticized coach Paris Saint-Germain after he dismissed concerns about the team using charter flights while driving nationally to save energy.
Asked at a press conference if PSG was considering using greener trains instead of flying to matches, coach Christophe Galtier sarcastically joked that he might switch to using sails to transport his millionaires instead.
Galtier smiled at the question at first, shook his head and pinched his nose as Kylian Mbappe’s star punch burst out laughing. After composing himself, Galtier said, “I thought I would get this question. Honestly, we spoke to the tour company this morning and we’re trying to see if we can travel on a sand yacht.
Their chuckling reaction sparked a media storm in France.
A number of politicians reacted furiously, and French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra replied in a tweet: “Mr. Galtier, we are used to more accurate and responsible answers than you – will we talk about it?
As the government urges consumers to reduce their use of fossil fuels, both to combat climate change and to reverse the appalling shortages amid tensions with Russian suppliers over the war in Ukraine, the apparent lack of concern by Galtier and Mbappe sparked accusations that have no contact with them.
“No, is that what you say ???? Guys, will you wake up ??? ” the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, wrote on Twitter.
Ecologist Francesca Pasquini invited Mbappe to the National Assembly to “teach you about climate issues with your team.”
“Your coach’s joke doesn’t make a lot of laughter!” she wrote on Twitter.
The debate about PSG’s use of short-haul flights began when the director of the French high-speed rail network called on the club to fly its players for a short leap from Paris to Nantes last weekend.
Alain Krakovitch, director of the French rail operator TGV-Intercity, noted that the high-speed trains of this network can travel about 380 kilometers (240 miles) to the western city in less than two hours. He retweeted a video posted by the PSG player of the team members aboard their flight for the Ligue 1 game on Saturday night. Paris beat Nantes 3-0.
Addressing PSG, Krakovitch wrote: “Again, I am renewing our TGV offer tailored to your specific needs.”
In response to questions from The Associated Press, PSG said there were no late TGV trains to take back to Paris after the game, forcing the team to spend the night in Nantes.
The club said the team is increasingly using buses for short trips.
