Recently, large sectors of American public and corporate space have begun to press for environmental protection. Many have put their money where their mouth is by employing ecotechnological innovations in their homes and offices.
As with most other social ventures, celebrities are leading the way. As more celebrities turn to more reasonably priced homes with less pollutants, less waste and more renewable energy, real estate investors are also learning to adapt to what is sure to be a major shift in architectural design and real estate development.
“The concept of ecotechnology emphasizes respect for the environment in all aspects of construction, from the floor plan to the furniture.” Says Jorge Loza, CEO of Ciudapolis, “The idea is to use natural and recyclable materials in projects that do not obstruct the ecological development of the environment”.
Jorge Loza is a serial real estate entrepreneur, philanthropist and advocate for social change who built Ciudapolis to become one of Peru’s leading ecotech real estate franchises. Since then, Ciudapolis has made a big impression on social media in Asia, Europe and America as one of the leading voices in Ecotechnology. Among its 1800 customers and over 500 investors, the company has worked with some significant names to create some of the most beautiful and eco-friendly homes.
“Celebrities are trendsetters all over the world, so at a time when more people start to incorporate eco-tech design into their properties, the industry should take notice and adjust accordingly,” explains Loza. “Celebrities own some of the boldest ecotechnological structures out there.”
Lisa Ling’s Energy-Neutral Home

Loza’s description reflects Lisa Ling’s Santa Monica home. CNN host and former co-host of The View and her husband, Paul Song, built Santa Monica’s first energy-neutral home in 2010. Leadership in the Energy and Environmental Design program.
According to Ling, “We achieved a 100% diversion rate. Materials from the old structure were used in the new home; nothing ended up in a landfill. The wood was resurfaced and used as wooden flooring; unused items were donated to Habitat. for Humanity.”

There is a 5,000 gallon water tank in front of the house to collect rainwater and waterless urinals, which combined save about 40,000 gallons of water annually.
The house also has 60 roof-mounted solar panels that provide electricity for hot water and underfloor heating. The exterior is also sustainable, but lushly landscaped with native plants and a rock garden.
Pretty Woman’s Eco-Marvel
Pretty Woman actress Julia Roberts spent $20 million on her 6,000-square-foot Malibu home to make it greener. From using recycled roof tiles and sustainable building materials to embracing renewable energy, Julia and her husband Daniel Moder have their carbon footprint under control.
Robert’s renowned green thumb is evidenced in the eco-friendly features she has implanted in her home. The house has a very scenic view of lush gardens with native species, vegetable gardens and greenhouses. The actress and her husband, Daniel Morder, also offset their energy needs by covering three roof surfaces with solar panels.
“When people hear about ecotechnological design, they instantly think only of Solar Panels and LED lights”, said Loza, “Ecotechnology goes beyond retrofittings, it starts with an attitude of valuing nature and shows itself in the theme of structures and in all design aspects. Creating structures that admit enough light and moisture to support the vegetation inside the house, the introduction of porches or roof gardens and an overall green attitude is necessary to create some of the best ecotechnological structures.”
Ed Begley’s Studio City Mansion
Over time, Ed Begley’s name has become synonymous with green living, and with good reason too. In 2016, the veteran Hollywood actor and Portlandia star finished building his eco-tech marvel in Studio City (L.A.).
In typical Begley style, the 3,896-square-foot home features a tiled master bath made entirely from recycled bottles and an outdoor chlorine-free pool purified by an ozone system. The front yard also features fruit trees and native plants scattered across the oak-studded lot.

There is also a gray water system that recycles for irrigation and a 10,000 gallon rainwater tank, which combine to increase water conservation. The home is also energy neutral and utilizes the latest solar panels, while boasting a two-car garage with E.V. charging ports.
A Green Landscape; Is Real Estate Adjusting Properly?
“The industry is not adapting fast enough, in my opinion,” says Loza, “aside from the fact that celebrities are now in record numbers, there are many other telltale signs; rising energy cost is one of them, Current national policies in countries like the US and many others in Europe and Asia are also leaning towards sustainable technological advances and renewable energy.”
In 2008, Loza quit his job as a banker and accountant. He and his wife, Jenny Barrera, decided to enter the real estate market. They bought an apartment in an exclusive area of Lima, paying 10% in cash with a credit card and financing the rest with a bank loan. After remodeling it and selling it in 6 months at a profit of $35K, Loza knew he was in the right business and has since found his passion in eco-tech real estate development.
Now he is running 8-figure real estate investment projects. He is also managing several large-scale investments and developments.
Ciudapolis is one of the largest real estate franchises in Peru, with more than 52 different franchises in South America and Asia. Real estate developers are often very concerned about the demand and possible ROI of wholesale ecotech developments, but the change in landscape is changing the thinking process. It doesn’t cost a truckload of money to plant trees, and vegetation and renewable energy sources like Solar aren’t as expensive as they once were.
The average American family may not be able to buy large properties like most celebrities, but real estate developers need to start developing similar resources on a smaller scale; backyard gardens, roof gardens and water conservancy systems would not cost an arm and a leg to incorporate.
According to Clean Technica, solar energy costs have dropped faster than anticipated since 2010. For example, residential solar was priced at $2.65/W in Q1 2021, down from $2.65/W in Q1 2021. 7.53/W in 2010, while utility-scale solar was $0.89/W compared to $5.66/W a decade ago. These prices indicate a large-scale international effort to push the world faster towards achieving a net-zero energy sector. When we compare the recent rise in gas prices, it is clear what trends predict.
As more famous faces join the trend, green adoption is likely to accelerate. As that time approaches, more property developers will potentially get more involved.
