Footballer Marcus Rashford’s children’s debut book will be handed out to 50,000 children this summer as part of an initiative by his reading club.
The Marcus Rashford Book Club, which is run in collaboration with Macmillan Children’s Books, KPMG and The National Literacy Trust, will distribute the book to primary school children in the most economically disadvantaged areas of the UK.
Rashford’s book, The Breakfast Club Adventures: The Beast Beyond the Fence, is co-authored by Alex Falase-Koya and illustrated by Marta Kissi.
Rashford said the reading club was designed to “get the right books into the hands of children with very limited access” and offer “a getaway from environments that can be quite challenging and find the joy of the reading “.
He described the books as “a great source of inspiration and motivation, and much needed for children struggling to see beyond what is on their doorstep.”
Falase-Koya said books were always “a refuge for me and a place where my imagination could ignite” when I was growing up, and he hoped The Breakfast Club Adventures would capture “the imagination of all children.”
The Breakfast Club Adventures is about 12-year-old Marcus, who receives a mysterious note inviting him to join the Breakfast Club Investigators after he throws his favorite football over the school fence, believing that he has lost forever. But Marcus soon embarks on an exciting adventure with new friends Stacey, Lise and Asim to solve the mystery of what is beyond the fence and get his football back.
The book is inspired by the adventures of Rashford who grew up and is aimed at children aged eight to 12 years.
The Marcus Rashford Book Club aims to encourage and encourage a love of reading in children and get free books for those who need them most. So far he has delivered more than 100,000 free books. The club’s two previous reading options were A Dinosaur Ate My Sister by Pooja Puri, illustrated by Allen Fatimaharan, and Silas and the Marvelous Misfits, written and illustrated by Tom Percival.
Another delivery of the reading club will take place in the autumn of 2022, when 25,000 more copies of a title that has not yet been announced will be delivered.
