Less than 14 months after tossing his first college pass, Arch Manning has created a separate name, image, and likeness category for himself — one that’s not about how much the generation’s five-star strategist can earn, but whether it matters to to earn something from everyone.
It’s a category where — at the top of the NIL food chain — football still takes center stage.
Manning, the celebrated Texas union, comes from the first football family, a brand so recognizable that his father Cooper, whose career was cut short due to spinal stenosis, is himself a bankable star. That’s before we mention Grandpa Archie and Uncles Peyton and Eli, whose commercial identity has transcended the sport they once played.
“They’re the Kennedys of football,” said Steve Wiltfong, director of football recruitment at 247Sports.
Arch Manning’s dedication to Texas on June 23 was kind of lost in the headlines when another round of conference rescheduling intervened. But the implications of that commitment have not faded.
Manning’s future is so promising, so lucrative and so diverse that the father of the next big thing after Manning is already asking for advice.
Dominic Raiola, father of quarterback Dylan Raiola (the No. 1 player in the class of 2024), has approached Cooper Manning to begin putting together a blueprint for navigating football in the NIL era. Dylan committed to the state of Ohio in May.
“I like the way they do things,” Dominic said of the Mannings. “Long answer, yes, we keep track. All agents call, right? Drew [Rosenhaus] calls. [High-profile Athletes First agent] Todd France calls. CAA calls.
“I think it’s good to have those conversations. … You want to make sure you’re educated about it. You don’t want to send your kid to the Wild West. ‘Here’s a million dollars, what do you do with it ?’ We want to be prepared.”
In NIL’s short one-year history, Manning is arguably the brightest star. His earning potential is already almost limitless, despite being a high school student.
Right now, his valuation is $3 million a year — an NIL estimate of what he could be worth — according to Blake Lawrence, CEO of Opendorse, a sports empowerment company heavily involved in NIL opportunities.
Tennessee prospect Nico Iamaleava has a known $8 million contract with a Tennessee collective, but the deal is heavily fraught with incentives, according to reports.
And his name is not Manning. Arch is the All-American gold standard while still attending Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans.
“The Texas quarterback should have the highest NIL earning potential of any position of any sport at any school in the NCAA,” Lawrence told CBS Sports. “Combine that with the power of the brand to be a Manning, and it’s easy to see Arch being able to make $3 million or more a year from NIL.”
Expanding that potential to earn money, Manning plays in Louisiana, one of the few states where high school students can earn NIL money. Despite this, Manning followed the path his uncles had charted in their native states. Peyton went to Tennessee and Eli chose Ole Miss.
“Do what you can to make Arch come to LSU and destroy Texas,” urged Louisiana Sen. Patrick Connick (R), who this year drafted an amendment to allow booster access in arranging NIL deals .
The NIL space has developed in fits and starts. The NCAA is still trying to work out improper incentives and the schools and boosters they would pay. NIL marketing agents, some of whom already represent NFL stars, are allowed.
Lawrence plans to roll out an ad rate card soon, a one-stop shop that could estimate the cost of athletes’ services.
“How much does it cost Arch to give a performance?” Lawrence asked hypothetically. “What does it cost for a social media post? What does it cost for him to do an autograph?”
The question remains: will Arch Manning or his family be interested in it? Arch may be at the top of the pyramid of those who will control and define NIL, rather than the other way around.
Oklahoma transfer QB Caleb Williams has some NIL opportunities at USC but is not slated to do anything with those companies during the season. Raiola essentially imitates that approach according to the Manning model.
Football comes first because the ultimate goal is not to sell a sports drink in college, but to take the sport to the next level.
“Athletes like Arch and athletes like [Duke’s No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick] Paolo Banchero are forward-thinking,” said Jim Cavale, CEO of NIL-centric INFLCR. “What they’re doing is looking at the bigger picture and not taking every deal and spending all their time on NIL because it’s work. They’re going to make sure it fits into the bigger picture of what they want to achieve.”

“That money is scarce,” he said. “If you’re not performing and… you want to go the route of performance, that’s what this whole thing is. If you’re not performing, who’s going to say, ‘Okay, we’re not paying you anymore.'” What are you going to do, sue them?”
Dylan Raiola is also at the tip of that pyramid where players can earn big NIL money even if they don’t necessarily need it. His arrival at Ohio State would continue a conga line of quarterback greats under coach Ryan Day.
In Texas, Manning is already celebrated as a soccer savior, arguably the program’s best quarterback since Colt McCoy led the Longhorns to the 2009 BCS Championship Game. Ohio State transfer five-star candidate Quinn Ewers would qualify for his third year when Manning arrives in Texas in 2023.
Not that Manning needs any more pressure on him.
“He’s just trying to get as far as he can,” says Wiltfong, who spoke to the decidedly unobtrusive Manning during the recruiting process. “He’s made a college decision to play for a bunch of coaches he believes in. He also wants to be in a cool college town. It’s not just football. The next thing is to have a great college experience because that’s what you’re supposed to do on that age and period in your life.
“I don’t know what I expected, but the first time I met him, he ate a hot dog for lunch.”
Sounds pretty close to normal. College football can use normal at this point.
If Manning has NIL deals, they are not publicly known at this time. The 18-year-old up-and-coming senior has maintained a low profile off the pitch despite his tremendous talent on the pitch. In fact, he announced his commitment with a modest piece of text.

What emerged after a year of NIL are two types of opportunities: market-driven – social media posts, merchandise sales, labor camps, etc. – and opportunities that are athletic, where players capitalize on their skills.
The Arch Manning phenomenon could reveal a third NIL type: all that other nonsense doesn’t matter.
“Football has always come first for the Manning family,” Wiltfong said.
