It’s hard to set expectations for a quarterback considered a “generational” quarterback. It’s even harder to set reasonable expectations for that quarterback as well. Still, Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr tried to do just that by evaluating all the second-year signal callers entering this season.
First, it’s important to understand some context regarding Lawrence’s rookie season with the Jaguars. Starting in Week 4, team chemistry deteriorated due to poor management, namely by former Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer and what happened after the team’s 24-21 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The team itself was not in very good shape either. Lawrence and the offense would rank 32nd in the NFL with just 253 points and 12 touchdown passes. Lawrence also threw 17 interceptions on the year. Simply put, his rookie campaign was disappointing, as was the 3-14 record the team held at the end of the season:
With that said, Orr set “reasonable” expectations for Lawrence:
17 starts, 63% completion rate, two or more game-winning drives, 22 touchdowns, fewer than 15 interceptions.
Breaking it down by each stat, the first two that stand out as more easily attainable benchmarks are 17 starts — the number of games in a given regular season — and 63% completion percentage. Last season, there were only eight quarterbacks who completed less than 63% of their passes.
Three of those were Lawrence and other first-round picks, including last year’s No. 2 overall draft pick Zach Wilson (55.6%) and Justin Fields (58.9%).
Given what the Jaguars surrounded Lawrence with this year compared to last season, building a 10-point jump isn’t unreasonable either.
This part of Orr’s assessment was particularly accurate:
“For all intents and purposes, Lawrence 2021 simply does not exist. He is not discussed. His film is hardly analyzed. He’s being treated — and should be — treated like a rookie quarterback who strangely slept through nightmare camp last year.”
He is also exactly right. While Lawrence’s rookie season was what it was, it’s probably best to just ignore the bottom line and not focus on the numbers, but rather how it happened to get to the right grade.
The Jaguars have gotten more of Lawrence’s success this year, at least on the surface, than the franchise did last year. The team has hired Doug Pederson, a quarterback guru of sorts, who has played quarterback in the NFL and coached several successful players, including Carson Wentz, Alex Smith and many others, as the team’s head coach.
Along with Pederson, the team hired quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy, offensive coordinator Press Taylor and passing coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. With the added offensive weapons of receiver Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram, Lawrence should have more success this year.
There are many ways to evaluate Lawrence and project his progression, and while most young quarterbacks take several years to find their way in the NFL, Lawrence should be able to find it sooner given his talent.
