For starters, I would like to admit to you a little secret: not long ago, I worked for IPR. I’ve moved on, but today I find myself in the enviable position of going on adventures where I take photos, use cameras, write articles, and meet old and new friends for the Iowa music scene. (You can also do that, via Studio One’s B-Side blog. I want to point out here that if you haven’t paid attention, Studio One has always been great. But recently, it’s become even more so.)
Now that I’ve set the stage and you know I have the eyes of someone who used to be deep inside and who chose to bring a camcorder this weekend, I want to talk about the IPR stage at 80 . / 35.
It’s about local, original music
When you understand what this stage does at the festival, you will realize how extraordinary it is. The mission of showcasing and celebrating local musicians is central to the 80/35 ethos, and I can’t think of a better example of this than what IPR did last weekend.
In addition to featuring local bands, the IPR stage captured a multi-track recording of everything for statewide broadcast on Iowa Public Radio and for posting on YouTube. This is part of what Studio One has done at music events in our state for years, although few acknowledge what is happening. I feel sorry for the Serious Music Person who didn’t stop to welcome me. As a novelty this year, the hosts of Studio One Tracks and All Access Mark, CeCe and Tony stayed on stage, presenting two of the acts that IPR presented live on air on Saturday. This setting is one of the most interesting additions to the IPR stage and, I think, one of the most interesting things happening at the festival. Not many radio stations come out live from music festivals. The number of radio stations that present live music from a real festival stage is even smaller. We must not assume that this happened in Des Moines. After all, scheduled radio broadcasts could be the original music festival in some way – it was the first medium that allowed us to listen together. In an age of pandemic where not everyone can come, the mission of making music accessible probably matters more now than ever.
I listened to several attendees asking about the technical challenges of being live on the air of a festival event and how they thought it was to see the hosts they have heard for years doing a live show in front of them. I don’t blame them, I worked at IPR and I never got tired of watching live programs behind the scenes.

Unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end, or at least my time in the DPI stage had to do it. It was an experience to come back as an outsider, and it was definitely the highlight of my 80/35. I was able to capture amazing local music and see that serious music fans enjoy the best music at the festival’s most fantastic venue. But it was also a lot, and I respect the IPR staff for keeping the job and building something better than before the pandemic. When the day was over, I felt fulfilled and a little guilty.
“Good luck to anyone who is editing this,” I recalled thinking to myself as I tried to approach a bird in a nearby tree as the final echoes of Anthony Worden’s ensemble evaporated into the space between the nearby buildings. When I finished my stand-alone concert on the IPR stage, I left the camera and went back to the hot sun with my gaze on the main stage of the festival. I whispered to myself, “This festival is really cool.”
