WORTHINGTON — Every July 4th, the “National Emblem March” kicks off the Worthington City Band’s “Amazing” concert program, and it will take effect in 2022.
But, whoa! With a new holiday starting at 7 pm. and an extended night of music from the band, as well as the Worthington Area Symphony Orchestra (WASO) and local music legend Paul Summers LaRoche, attendees can expect several hours of celebration.
“We call it the ‘Wind, Water and WOW!’ music festival, and it’s basically a musical celebration of our past, present, and future,” said Kris Stewart, flutist in the city band and WASO and leadership team member. of the last ensemble.
Chautauqua Park’s historic band shell will host an extravaganza of pop, light classical and patriotic music, and the band shell — recently restored and polished to showcase its acoustic and architectural beauty — was itself the star of the night.
“Kudos to the Worthington parks department,” said Beth Habicht, WASO string player and member of the leadership team.
“Chautauqua Park is such a beautiful place, and since 2022 marks the 75th anniversary of our twin city’s relationship with Crailsheim and Worthington’s 150th anniversary, there is no more fitting place for our concerts than the skin of the band Chautauqua Park.”
Indeed, WASO dedicated its own first number – “March of 1941” by the famous American composer John Williams – to bandshell, which was built in 1941 and received the designation of a national historic site several years ago.
“The sustainable charm of the seashells on the shores of Lake Okabena is noteworthy,” said Habicht.
Mike Peterson, conductor of the “Amazing” Worthington City Band for the past few years, is poised to lead his troupe of about 50 instrumentalists in what he says is their annual patriotic concert.
“The city’s band, with a history of 128 years, adds a sense of tradition to the community, and this new music festival gives us the impetus to start something fresh as we move into the future with music that is accessible and fun for people to listen to. in a very interesting setting,” said Peterson.
Music, food and face painting

WASO conductor Christopher Stanichar, whose 50-person orchestra prepares for this outdoor performance, ensures that his program selection contains something to suit everyone’s musical tastes.
Having served as assistant conductor to the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra several years ago, Stanichar is well positioned to present a diverse program that highlights various aspects of the United States on his birthday.
“I chose works from composers who represent the American dream in different ways,” said Stanichar, citing Arturo Marquez’s “Conga del Fuego” and music from the hit film “Austin Powers” by Quincy Jones as examples of the diversity on display.
“Quincy Jones is the most successful and famous black composer in Hollywood,” he added. “It’s going to be a fun program.”
Habicht points to “The Orange Blossom Special,” a medley of songs from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” suite and lighthearted “The Typewriter” (featuring Brett Cooper on … a typewriter) from renowned American composer Leroy Anderson as his concert favorites.
“And Paul Summers LaRoche will join the orchestra as we support him on his two original compositions, ‘Star People’ and ‘Dakota Rainstorm,’” said Habicht.
LaRoche, a Worthington High School graduate and nationally renowned Native American musician along with his band Brule, recently returned to live in Worthington and was one of the catalysts behind “Wind, Water and WOW.”
“I have a vision for things here,” says LaRoche, “and when I brought this up a while ago, everyone joined in. “We’re happy to at least try this for the first season.”
Longtime fans of the former Worthington LaRoche (Paul’s Place) nightclub from decades ago may be pleased to hear the July 4 list will include a number or two from that old playlist.
“I won’t reveal (in advance) what I will be performing, but I will play some things from the past,” promised LaRoche, who was the special musical guest that night.
“In a strange way, it bridges the gap between past, present and future,” he continued. “I’m just trying to point out that there are country kids who come back here who are part of a minority Native American community, both drawing from the mainstream music I’ve done in the past and more importantly sharing with the orchestra what I’ve been doing collectively. musical. in the modern era as a Native American musician.”
LaRoche emphasizes that the collaboration he and Brule have had with WASO in recent years is far more unique than locals might realize.
“Contemporary Native American music with a symphony orchestra is at the cutting edge of the last musical frontier,” says LaRoche, “and the only place it happens in the United States as far as I know is with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and WASO—very seldom.”
Stanichar and Peterson are eager to share their ensemble musical gifts with the greater Worthington community on July 4.
“We hope people will attend,” said Peterson, “because we think they will enjoy quality music.”
“It would have been nice to hear all these different composers, with Paul’s music helping with the fireworks,” said Stanichar.
LaRoche added, “This is a celebration of a city that embraces American history and democracy.”
