The cable has been cut. Ad sales are in decline. And layoffs are also threatened.

Next year will be a bleak one in sports media. But the business will still have a lot of activity. This is how I see the shocking year 2023.

Amazon wins Sunday Ticket bid

Neither the NFL nor Apple will make enough concessions to get the job done. Google has yet to show that it will spend too much for sports rights, and it’s not starting here. That will open up space for Amazon, which has already gotten a taste of the NFL’s popularity through “Thursday Night Football.” Amazon will close a deal that does not include a stake in the league’s media assets by the time of the Super Bowl. But Amazon will eventually agree to a joint venture with the league that oversees those media properties.

ESPN, Turner exclusive NBA window lapses

For the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, the NBA’s media rights will hit the open market, and the league will encounter a ton of interest from traditional media companies like Fox and NBC, as well as digital players like Apple and Amazon. An exclusive window from ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery Sports’ deal runs through the end of the year, meaning the NBA will have to wait until 2024 to close the deal. At that point, ESPN will remain the NBA’s primary partner, with NBC/Peacock and TNT/HBO Max sharing two other packages. Look, too, for the NBA to woo younger fans with a short-term digital or social media deal where, say, YouTube gets rights to premium live content and rights to sell fourth-quarter games on a pay-per-view basis.

NASCAR renews with Fox, NBC

Digital media companies engaged NASCAR over their rights. But circuit executives will decide that a digital deal would put too much pressure on team sponsors who need the largest available audience. ESPN, Fox share expanded CFP rights

The College Football Playoff expands from four to 12 teams in 2024-25, but ESPN holds the rights to the semifinals and championship through 2026. Look for ESPN and Fox to share early-round CFP games for those two years. Read also : Mickey Mantle’s card breaks record, as sports memorabilia is raised. Many companies – Warner Bros. Discovery Sports and Amazon among them – will be waiting to bid on this package when the whole thing becomes available.

Amazon gets Pac-12 rights

ESPN will be willing to share the Pac-12’s media rights with Amazon, but won’t offer the conference significantly more than it pays the Big 12. That will prompt the Pac-12 to sell almost its entire media package to Amazon for a price that’s slightly more than what the Big 12 gets from ESPN and Fox. The Pac-12 will produce a handful of prime-time football games that it will then sell to CBS.

NWSL goes to Apple

A professional women’s soccer league will attract a lot of attention when it hits the market in 2023, including from the newly formed Scripps Sports. The established media companies won’t offer enough money though, pushing the league toward Apple where it will be paired with MLS. Apple will be particularly attracted by the fact that it can buy all NWSL rights — domestic and international — at the same time.

ESPN renews with UFC

ESPN’s contract with the UFC expires in 2025, but the media company will enter into a deal next year to prevent the UFC from going on the open market. Negotiations will begin after the Super Bowl, with a handshake agreement coming at the end of the year. The deal will keep the UFC on ESPN into the 2030s.

LIV Golf cuts a U.S. broadcast deal

No, it won’t be with Fox, despite rumors that the two were close to a deal last fall. Instead, LIV Golf will contract with CW Network, which is majority owned by Nexstar. LIV will not receive a fee for the rights, but will handle the majority of ad sales. LIV will also manage the overall production.

Netflix does not get into sports

Netflix will start streaming live events (think reality shows, comedy specials and shows), but won’t get into live sports in 2023. That’s good news for business because it will give Netflix a chance to experiment with live ads. supported programming, the first step before engaging in live sports.

DirecTV renews with Sinclair’s RSNs

The biggest deal in sports media will happen in the fall, when DirecTV’s contract to carry the Bally Sports RSNs expires. This battle of the chariots will make a lot of noise, but both sides will reach an agreement. DirecTV is designated as a distributor for sports fans, so it must retain the RSNs. And Sinclair’s RSNs cannot exist without DirecTV transmissions.

Tom Brady will not be in the Fox booth in 2023

He may continue to play, or he may retire. It does not matter. He won’t be in Fox’s top NFL booth next year as the network’s current No. 1 — Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen — have become a top team.
