The charity initiative Ben Folds Keys For Kids supports seven nonprofit organizations in North Carolina to provide keyboards and little-to-no-cost music lessons to children.

Born and raised in Winston-Salem, Folds is a singer-songwriter and leader of alternative rock band Ben Folds Five, which formed in Chapel Hill. Now, at age 55, Folds says that he has the desire to give back to North Carolina.

“The essence of what we do is connect the dots, cheerleading, raise money and get involved in any way we can, but the important thing to know is that this organization already exists,” he said. “And without them, a lot of kids. Won’t get access to music early.”

Keys For Kids is a public-private sector partnership with the North Carolina Arts Foundation and the North Carolina Arts Council. Folds said that he joined the organization with Lady of North Carolina Kristen Cooper first to decide on the seven premiere partners of Keys For Kids.

He stated that seven non -profit organizations were selected from multiple locations so that resources were distributed evenly across the country.

“That’s a big thing,” Folds said. “It’s very important – change my life. The desire to help and give back is where it started, and the journey has led us so far to be connected with these seven organizations to begin with. They were chosen as diverse as possible., Location and all, so that not all go to one place. “

Keys For Kids currently focuses exclusively on organizations in North Carolina, and some of the seven nonprofit organizations based in the Research Triangle.

Kelley Downey, executive director of Music Empowerment in Carrboro, stated that the organization offers free music lessons for children and involves UNC students who become mentors.

“We serve K-12 students on a variety of the most popular instruments, piano and guitar, so he chose us as one of the organizations he wanted to work for,” he said.

He stated that he appreciates the “extra encouragement,” because Music Empowerment does not receive government funding and relies on corporations, individuals and foundations such as Keys For Kids for support.

Downey adds that the support came at the perfect time, because Folds gave more visibility to the organization on its 20th anniversary.

“In the big picture and the big scheme of things, it’s a small slice of the pie, but we were so happy to have every small slice of that pie,” she said.

Durham -based nonprofit Kidznotes is another Keys For Kids pair. Executive Director Shana Tucker said that he is excited that Kidznotes is one of the organizations selected.

He stated that the fund will not only help children learn to play the piano, but will also open doors to organize music and accompany students who play other instruments.

“Our philosophy is to discuss and promote access to creativity, regardless of your financial situation,” he said. “We believe that creativity protects humanity over humanity, and most importantly, as one of our core values, we believe that everyone has access to creativity, for us specifically through music.”

Folds said that he hopes he will be able to support seven organizations and add more in the coming years.

He said that while he doesn’t know how much the Keys For Kids organization will be able to support in the future, he said it is important that it continues to grow and that the ultimate goal is to positively affect as many lives as possible.

“We do as much as we can,” he said. “If we can bite 30 of them, good.”
