Inflation is forcing more and more North Texas people to seek help from food banks to feed their families.

Juani Lara, 45, is one of the hundreds who lined up early Friday to pick up free food baskets at the North Texas Food Bank car party on the University of North Texas in Dallas campus.

Lara said that while gas prices are falling, rising prices for essential food items make it weak.

“We fight because you can easily spend $ 150 on just a few things, not everything you need,” said Lara, who returned to the food distribution event for the first time in a year.

Nationally, the number of families returning to food banks has increased as a result of 40 years of inflation, reports The Associated Press

Jeff Smith, NTFB’s communications manager, said the impact of inflation is visible to many families in North Texas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this organization consumed an average of about 11 million meals a month, and that number rose to 13 million in May.

On Friday, families waited in line for up to two hours for meals. The line of cars made it onto Interstate 20, about 1.3 miles long. According to a police officer on the UNTD campus, there were about 75 vehicles in the line at around 10:00.

72-year-old Oak Cliff resident Alino Savala said he arrived at the mobile pantry before 8am when distribution began. At 9 am there were about 30 more cars ahead of him. Savala collected food from a food bank for the first time.

“Everything is very expensive right now, so you are looking for (food) and they told me they are giving it away here,” Savala said as he sat down in the car.

Eronia King, coordinator of the UNT-Dallas event, said £ 12,000 of food was distributed on Friday, enough to feed up to 400 families.

“We definitely saw how many people we saw, and we had to reject some families because we had run out of food by then,” she said.

The items that the food bank was handing out on Friday included pasta, vegetables, fruit, eggs and chicken. At 9:44 the eggs were finished.

North Texas Food Bank will have mobile food pantries every third Friday of the month at the location listed on the website. Food distribution starts at 8am in August and at 9am from September.

People do not need to register to receive the shopping cart. Food is served on a first come, first served, until it’s gone. Food is issued only to the people driving the car. Each person is asked to enter their name and the number of people in the family to determine the size of the food basket.
