A new UN report released Wednesday outlines dire statistics on hunger rates worldwide, showing that billions of people face food insecurity or are on the brink of starvation.
The report, “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World,” says world hunger is increasing by 2021, with some 2.3 billion people facing moderate or severe difficulty getting enough food. The number facing severe food insecurity has risen to around 924 million.

Issued by the World Food Programme, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the World Health Organization and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the report said the 2021 statistics make it clear “the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, insecurity and malnutrition in the world.” all forms.”
The heads of the five agencies said in the report that in addition to disruptions to supply chains from the war in Ukraine that raised food prices, more frequent and extreme climate events are also causing supply problems, especially in low-income countries.

The report said hunger continued to increase last year in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean, but at a slower pace from 2019 to 2020.
“By 2021, hunger will affect 278 million people in Africa, 425 million in Asia and 56.5 million in Latin America and the Caribbean,” he said.
David Beasley, head of the UN’s World Food Programme, said analysis showed that “a record 345 million acutely hungry people are marching to the brink of starvation” – a 25% increase from 276 million in early 2022 before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. The number reached 135 million before the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.

“There is a real danger it will climb higher in the months to come,” he said. “What’s even more worrying is that when this group is broken up, a staggering 50 million people in 45 countries are just one step away from starvation.”
The prevalence of “undernutrition” — when food consumption is insufficient to sustain an active and healthy life — is used to measure hunger, and will continue to increase in 2021. The report estimates that more than 828 million people faced hunger last year.
Before the war, Ukraine and Russia together accounted for nearly a third of the world’s exports of wheat and barley and half of its sunflower oil. Russia and its ally Belarus, meanwhile, are the world’s 2nd and 3rd producers of potash, a key ingredient in fertilizers.
Beasley called for an urgent political solution that would allow Ukrainian wheat and barley to re-enter global markets.

The UN’s development goals call for an end to extreme poverty and no hunger by 2030, but the report says projections suggest that 8% of the world’s population – nearly 670 million people – will face hunger by the end of the decade. That is the same number of people as in 2015 when the goal was adopted.
