Not only are Netflix and Paramount Plus canceling shows right now, but Prime Video has just pulled one of its flagship TV shows for 2022, and it only lasted one season.
Deadline (opens in a new tab) reports that Prime Video has picked up a second season of Night Sky. The news of the ambitious sci-fi show’s cancellation comes less than two months after the show’s entire eight-episode first season dropped on Amazon’s streaming service. High production costs and a lack of “significant audience impact” are reported to be the main reasons for the show’s early termination.
Despite its short life, Night Sky left its mark on television history. The first episode of the show was broadcast into outer space and set a record for the furthest distance from earth that a television series was broadcast. Let’s just hope there aren’t any Martians out there desperate for a second season.
What was Night Sky about?
Created by Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly, Night Sky was a sci-fi drama centered around a seemingly ordinary man and woman living in Illinois. Simmons) is a former woodworker, seemingly nothing out of the ordinary for a couple of 50 years.
However, the couple is actually hiding a secret: years ago they discovered a portal in their backyard that leads to a strange (apparently) abandoned planet. Irene and Franklin have been guarding the secret ever since, but when a mysterious young man (Chai Hansen) steps through the portal, they discover that all is not as it seems. The seniors are soon drawn into an intergalactic adventure revolving around a mysterious cult.
In addition to Spacek, Simmons and Hansen, Night Sky also starred Adam Bartley, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández, Piotr Adamczyk and Kiah McKirnan.
What did the critics say about Night Sky?

The high-concept show scored a decent, if not spectacular, 73% on Rotten Tomatoes (opens in a new tab), but had a slightly higher audience score of 81%.
The Playlist’s Brain Tallerico (opens in new tab) praised the show’s execs: “Every time Night Sky threatens to drift into something disposable, Simmons and Spacek shine, reminding everyone that they’re the real stars.”
Dan Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) was equally impressed with Simmons and Spacek, declaring that “the two Oscar winners are never less than compelling.” Although not as enthusiastic about the performance surrounding the two actors, Fienberg suggested that the writing could not keep up with the lead actors’ performances.
A more negative review came from Lucy Mangan of The Guardian (opens in a new tab), who called the show “more of an exercise in frustration than anything”. Some critics also questioned whether Night Sky would have worked better as a two-hour movie rather than a lengthy eight-episode TV show.
Analysis: Prime Video does a Netflix

Prime Video’s decision to cancel Night Sky, which was heavily promoted before launch, is further proof that the streaming wars can be brutal. This sci-fi show can now be added to the very long list of streaming shows that never lived up to their potential. Expect it to appear on the list of canceled TV shows too soon in the future.
This cancellation really stings because the premise of Night Sky was a hook and the leads were perfectly cast. Although the first season was a little bumpy, the second season seemed to find its footing. Unfortunately, we’ll never know if Prime Video could have had another hit the size of The Expanse if the streamer had given the show’s creative team a little more time.
Of course, sci-fi content is notoriously expensive to produce, mainly due to the costly special effects, so it stands to reason that Night Sky’s failure to attract significant audiences in its release window was a death blow. Still, for viewers who watched and enjoyed the sci-fi drama, Night Sky remains another what if?
