Welcome back to the All-Tim’s Top 10 Video Games Countdown.
In this countdown, Jon Johnston and I will be counting down our 10 favorite games of all time. Background reading can be found at the link in the 10th place, but as you can tell, Jon and I grew up playing different video games while I grew up in the greatest era of all time and Jon grew up in a different place.
If you want to catch up, then here you go: Area 10. Area 9. Area 8. Area 7. Area 6. Area 5. Area 4. Area 3.
Nate’s 2nd Place Game – Final Fantasy VII
I think many knew that there was a good chance that Final Fantasy VII would come out. This may interest you : “Stray” Cat Video Game Brings Benefits to Real Cats.
This was the first game I worried about. I used to wake up EARLY on a school day to go downstairs to play Final Fantasy VII.
Maybe it wasn’t good for my brain development but there was something about this game that was different from the others I tried to play. Especially since this was the first version of the game, and the last, that had an RPG fighting style.
The main character, Cloud, has a sword that is almost twice the size of his entire body. It’s stupid, but he still looked good.
As for the story, the game initially allows you to name the characters. So what did I do? I named Cloud – “Nate.” The rest I named after my friends. It took on a whole new meaning when certain people could experience good or bad things.
What I realized during this reading is that I need to start playing new games. Jon is like 60 years old to me and still throwing games like Witcher 3. Right now I’m playing Battlefront with my son in co-op mode which is really fun. He loves playing Spider-Man even though I have to cut back on his playing time.
Jon’s 2nd Place Game – Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the most perfect video game ever made. This may interest you : Big News Video Games of the Week (June 18 – 24).
The only negative thing I can find about this game is its online play against other players. I have played it several times. I gave up when a guy shot me in the field while I was running with a .22 rifle. WTF. I absorb these things because I grew up hunting and I can’t separate what a gun can do in real life from what it should do in a video game. I also have time to act like a drunken 90 year old sloth.
This story is amazing. The characters have clear arcs, just like you’d find in a good book, except this book doesn’t require you to do unpleasant things like beat a man with tuberculosis to death. Many things that are created now have to deal with checking the box; have we included different characters, have we portrayed them correctly, and most importantly, will anyone be offended?
Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t worry about any of those things. The result is fantastic. You couldn’t film this because the result would be a waterless piece.
Arthur Morgan has to deal with his death, and because of that he will do it to make him a brutal killer and destroy the lives of many people. We watch the Dutch bewildered and nervous about the “last heist”. A good number of characters join the story line, and we see how much their lives play out.
Gameplay – WOW. Various types of open world; from the humidity of St. Denis to the frozen tundra of Ambarino, you find whatever you want. It’s a long game, and if you get tired of the story, you can go hunting and fishing, which added to the game instead of being a burden.
Red Dead 2 has its critics, like this one from Polygon complaining about the game’s design. It’s a lot of words about how the game control doesn’t work as it should, how the reality is a burden. My thought was – it took a lot of effort to choose, but I think that’s what happens when you live these things?
Also, it says a lot about the story for me. Can I be Arthur Morgan? Yes, I can, and I feel desperate to make enough money. When the outbreak started and there weren’t enough masks to go around, I started wearing a red bandana to the grocery store. I would tell people that it is the same day as “Arthur Morgan”. Many of them got the joke. They didn’t stay the hell away from me, which was the goal. I was walking around saying the same things Arthur used to say to his horse, like, “Sho” and “Okay, girl”.
Respect plays an important role in the game. What ending will you get? Will you play it more than once to see what happens when you choose a different song?
This game was released in 2018. It’s been four years since then?
