Even in the largest video game franchises, a few releases are often destined not to be sung. With tentpole franchises like Legend of Zelda and God of War both have new releases in the future, some of their most underrated predecessors deserve a visit again.

Long-running franchises have to make a choice between sticking to the tried and true formula or trying to innovate, and both have their own risks. Whether due to the fatigue of the franchise or a controversial new direction, some of the best games are covered in their own franchises.

10 Mass Effect 3

10 Mass Effect 3

The Mass Effect trilogy is one of the most loved series in all games. While some fans believe Andromeda deserves a second chance, it is the third entry in the original trilogy that is unfairly scrutinized. After the phenomenal Mass Effect 2, each follow-up had some great shoes to fill.

The main criticism of Mass Effect 3 is its end, which set aside all the choices made in the series for a single, anticlimactic decision. This is a fair complaint, but it ignores how big the rest of the game is. Mass Effect 3 includes some of the best and most varied gameplay in the franchise. 9 LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean

9 LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean

For the most part, LEGO video games have kept pretty close to the same formula that made them so popular, and it works almost every time. See the article : Richard Sherman joins Amazon Prime Video’s “TNF” coverage, leaving the door open for the NFL’s return. The series has fantastically adapted several huge movie franchises, but unfortunately the making of Pirates of the Caribbean is often overlooked.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean had a large cast of playable characters with unique abilities, spectacular recreations of iconic moments from the film, a brilliant use of the first film’s famous curse, and it was just a general blast to play. Even against other great LEGO games, this deserves to be considered one of the best.

8 Far Cry Primal

8 Far Cry Primal

Far Cry Primal was a great departure from all that the series was known for. Instead of the island’s typical blazing adventure of previous game guns, Primal took the series back to prehistoric times. The game was not a success with everyone, but it worked surprisingly well. The combat was well adapted even with the primitive weapons, the environment was beautiful and alive, and the animals could be tamed and utilized in ways beyond even the previous games. Primal may have been a huge change, but one that was handled impressively well.

7 Uncharted: Golden Abyss

7 Uncharted: Golden Abyss

The biggest issue facing Uncharted: Golden Abyss was not some fault of the game itself, but that it was exclusive to the Playstation Vita. While not technically as advanced as its console counterparts, Golden Abyss was a big entry in the franchise.

Serving as a prequel to the main series, Golden Abyss had the newest fun characters to support Nathan Drake, some impressive graphics for a handheld game, and did a brave job of adapting the game of Uncharted for Vita. Unfortunately, being more alone, the game never reached the height of the other games and was left out of the remastered collection in 2015.

6 Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass

6 Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass

One of the reasons why the Legend of Zelda franchise has remained so popular is its willingness to experiment with its formula. Following on from The Wind Waker, The Phantom Hourglass for the Nintendo DS was a mix of several major hits from previous games, along with several new features.

The control scheme actually worked fabulously well for the DS, and the game still retained the same massive scope of serial console releases. Players can sail along a huge ocean, face towering bosses, and complete many side activities. It is also one of the few games that has emerged from Ganondorf as the primary antagonist, making Phantom Hourglass a classic underrated.

5 Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017)

Pandemic Studio’s original Star Wars Battlefront 2 in 2005 is still to this day one of the best Star Wars games ever put on disk. When the series resumed in 2015, fans were excited. After the first mediocre game, Star Wars Battlefront 2 fell to a critical ice age.

Filled with loot boxes and a somewhat disappointing campaign, the game was torn apart by fans and critics. Thankfully and miraculously, since then the game has been heavily revised and is now a genuinely fun experience. The fight is exhilarating, there are dozens of characters to control from the three trilogies and a variety of new game modes. It may have been nowhere to go except since its release, but Battlefront 2 is now definitely worth playing.

4 God of War: Ghost of Sparta

Like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, God of War: Ghost of Sparta the main pitfalls was that it was just a handheld release. Ghost of Sparta was a spinoff for the PSP and was the second God of War game on the console.

Surprisingly, Ghost of Sparta managed to keep up with the full release of the console at the time. Her fight was appropriately bombastic and satisfying, her graphics were undoubtedly better than that of the Ps2 releases, and she had an interesting story. Thankfully the game has been included in several collections, but it still rarely gets the attention it deserves.

3 Assassin’s Creed Rogue

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is a big favorite by fans in the series, making it even more disappointing that its Rogue sequel takes so little attention. There are a few reasons for this, the game was launched near the end of its console generation, and was released on the same day as another Assassin’s Creed game, Unity.

While Rogue wasn’t a big improvement over Black Flag, its gameplay was just as fun, with several new weapons and types of missions. The game also turned sides to the central conflict of the series, with players taking on the role of Templar instead of the usual Assassin. Thankfully, the game has been remastered and transferred to various collections since its launch.

2 Batman: Arkham Origins

The Batman Arkham series features some of the most well-crafted superhero games of all time, with excellent games and compelling stories. The odd one in the franchise is the prequel, Arkham Origins. The game was made by a different developer and is often left out because of this.

The sad thing is, Arkham Origins can easily fit along with the other games in the series. It has beautiful graphics, introduced the crime scene recreation mechanic, and hosts some of the best boss battles in the Arkham series. The game itself may not be as polished, but Arkham Origins still deserves a lot more love.

1 Bioshock 2

The sequel to the legendary Bioshock had a monumental task to live with the innovative original. Bioshock’s atmosphere and reflections on the nature of free will would be difficult to duplicate and even harder to overcome. Thankfully, Bioshock 2 did a pretty admirable job.

The plot is not as strong as the original, but it was still fun and had several moments to touch. The gameplay flowed smoothly like never before, with players being able to use weapons and plasmids at the same time. Bioshock 2 certainly has its flaws, but it’s a shame that Infinite has led to it being basically forgotten.
