My husband calls me “playful” and “screen-time puritan,” and my kids accuse me of being overprotective when I limit my time on YouTube, video games, and other programs. I always tell them to put away the screens and go play with their friends.
So imagine my surprise when my six-year-old son immediately befriended a group of high school and college students a few months ago by – you guessed it – playing video games.
Our family entered the NIU Esports Arena, and within 5 minutes my six-year-old child was sitting with five college students playing the Nintendo Super Smash Bros. game. He happily chatted about his favorite characters and their abilities, engaged in a bit of friendliness. nervous, and felt at home. The college students welcomed him as part of the group – and went a little quiet to him in the contest.
When we left, my son was on cloud 9. Besides, he imagined himself as a college student, chatting about what video games he could play and what classes he could take in college. He is still not very clear about the courses and specials available. (He’ll be disappointed to learn that you can’t specialize in scuba diving.) But video games have helped him imagine his future and feel at home on a university campus. He says he’s not sure, but he’ll probably go to NIU.
I will still encourage my kids to go out and play this summer. But this experience also opened my eyes to the power of video games to build community and imagination.
