The new space invites students, faculty, staff and the community to innovate together
“That’s the cyberbullying of a property,” says Eric Holt, and his fingers get to work.

Holt’s fingers keep fluttering, and suddenly anything seems achievable. Overlay demographic information, nearby services, traffic patterns, real-time real estate listings, and even popular places to dine nearby.
“You can get a lot of geospatial data around the property and start figuring out who the product is, why people would live in it, what they want, what their needs are,” said Holt, an assistant professor at Franklin L. Burns School. of Real Estate Management and Construction. “It will really transform the way I teach.”
“Transformer” is a word that is often talked about when describing the new Marion J. Crean collaboration, located on the third floor of Daniels College of Business. The LCD screen arc (known as Liquid Galaxy) wallpapers a high stage. A few steps away, an 18-foot extension of interactive touch screens (the Bluescape Wall) allows teams to come up with ideas together, whether in person or online. A conference room can accommodate at least a dozen video calls and face-to-face meetings. And in the midst of it all, round tables and wheelchairs equip guests to get together and enjoy the 360-degree experience.
“Space matters,” said Barbara Jackson, principal of Burns School and visionary of the Collaboratory. “It influences how we interact, how we connect, how we are able to solve problems. This is a manifestation of what exactly this means.”
For Jackson, last week’s grand opening took more than a decade to prepare. The idea came to him when he was teaching at Cal Poly, but it wasn’t until he came to DU in 2013 that he felt he was on fertile ground to cultivate it. Daniels was the only institution in the country with a real estate management and construction program.
“I saw the vision of creating Burns School as the center of the most advanced education in real estate and construction, and I think we’ve established it in that trajectory,” Jackson said. “We now have a platform for seamless interaction between industry and academia. Students will have access like never before to access real-world real-world challenges.”
The challenges of the real world come first. After overcoming the Great Recession of 2008, Nello Gonfiantini III (BSBA 1976, MBA 1977), began a chair endowed in honor of the beloved former faculty member Michael Crean. Jackson remembers meeting Gonfiantini at his home in Reno, Nevada, to talk about it.

Burns School cut the loop of the Collaboration with a reception, welcoming students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members for a cake and a glass of champagne. It was a way to celebrate success, but also to honor the many people whose donations, large and small, raised the $ 900,000 needed for construction. Jackson was dedicated to thanking everyone who contributed to the creation of the Collaborator, including fundraisers, architects, construction team members, and administrative staff.
Gonfiantini, the man whose donation started it all, was among those soaked in the new facility.
“It’s been a long time coming and I think it’s going to have an amazing effect on students and people who want to collaborate,” he said. “It’s very applicable today: the technology and the way people learn.”
Students and faculty demonstrated the capabilities of the Collaboration, billing it as part of the classroom, partly as an innovation space, and partly as a learning laboratory. They promoted the advisor network conference room, which allowed students to connect with alumni and professionals from around the world, as long as their schedule allowed.
“It’s the essence of what makes the center so special,” said David Waterman, a 2022 graduate whose family helped fund the construction. “It’s a place where students and professionals can come together, share ideas and grow both personally and professionally.”
Holt sees it as a way to combine industry knowledge with new ideas. For Jackson, it is an opportunity to involve other departments on campus and perhaps inspire them to create similar spaces of their own. And for Vivek Choudhury, dean of Daniels College of Business, it is nothing more than revolutionary.
“One of the things we’ve been talking about since I got here is how digital technology will transform the world,” he said. “Real estate is no exception, but we are ready. Our students will leave here with state-of-the-art knowledge on how technology will play a role in real estate development and construction management in the field.
“This will change the game. This will take our real estate program to the next level.”
