It’s not every day, year, or even decade that a legitimate new theme park opens in the United States. Makes sense. In the eyes of many industry enthusiasts, the North American market is for all intents and purposes saturated with theme parks; they say that – like a sponge that can’t hold a drop of water anymore – the industry is “mature”; that every metropolitan area that can support a theme park already has one, and that the future of the industry lies in the boundless markets of Asia and the Middle East.
But right here in this country, a new park has emerged to challenge that. Look — Lost Island Theme Park in Waterloo, Iowa, isn’t exactly in a bustling metropolis. It is also far from the tourist centers of New York, Orlando and Los Angeles. And to be completely transparent, this new 2022 park isn’t quite complete either. With the delayed opening of several (bigger) rides, below-expected attendance, and more freshly laid dirt than grass or trees, it’s clear that Lost Island has some catching up to do and grow.
But let’s be clear: no true theme or theme park fan would point to Lost Island’s flaws and laugh. Instead, this is a park that each of us should be rooting for. Unthinkable, Lost Island dared to transform the vast soybean fields of Iowa into creating something more interesting, ambitious and original than Disney or Universal would attempt on their scale. Legend of Lost Island
To understand how we got here, you have to know that for Iowans, “Lost Island” was an escape long before the idea of a theme park in Waterloo was born. To see also : 3 ways to avoid summer trips. Inspired by a visit to Wisconsin Dells (the infamous “Water Park Capital of the World”), the local Burch family decided to add a unique side business to their existing furniture company: a water park.
Lost Island Water Park opened in 2001, and while it took a few years to find a foothold, there’s no doubt that today Lost Island Water Park is a landmark in the city of 67,000 and the surrounding region.
In fact, Lost Island has earned a reputation as one of the best water parks in the country… perhaps an unexpected feature of the Midwest, but not entirely illogical. After all, water parks have relatively low start-up costs and a relatively easy path to profitability because they generally require much less investment, staffing and expansion than theme parks.
A lost island turned a small piece of Iowa into a Polynesian paradise and a local treasure. As of 2022, reports suggest that Lost Island Water Park manages to attract more than 2,000 customers a day during the summer season… not too shabby!
So you can imagine that the Birch family began to imagine what could be next. According to an interview with In Park Magazine, options for expanding Lost Island included an indoor water park, a high ropes course or a family entertainment center. But with their design partners at Cincinnati’s BDR Design Group, a bold idea came into focus: a theme park as a second gateway to the resort…
What would really set the Lost Island theme park apart is that it will rely on the kind of storytelling once reserved for intellectual property-backed destination parks like Disney and Universal. Think about it. From escape rooms to traveling exhibitions; “experiential art museums” like Meow Wolf to pop-up experiences, there’s a growing sense that in the world of themed entertainment, people don’t just want rides; they want experience; to step into the world.
So, by the time construction of the Lost Island theme park (hereafter referred to as Lost Island) began, the Bertches and their partners at BDR had developed more than just blueprints and schematics, but a mythology. A world of characters, styles and architectures that together created a lost, mythical world of elemental realms right in the middle of those soybean fields.
Reportedly $100 million and many pandemic delays later, it’s here… We’re not going to tell you that Lost Island is worth ditching your Disney plans or booking a flight to Des Moines. But for those in the region or embarking on a Midwest coast tour, when it comes to creativity, heart and ambition, you may be surprised at what awaits you at Lost Island…
The Lost Isle is divided into five “realms”, each imbued with its own mythology, story, characters and symbology. The four areas of the park represent the elements – Yuta (earth), Udara (air), Awa (water) and Mura (fire). The fifth realm – Tamariki (spirit) – represents the playful, penetrating force that keeps them in balance.
Tamariki (Spirit)

The playful TAMIKOA GROTTO playground (above) is of course the centerpiece of the country. But since the Tamariki keep the rest of the island empire in balance, you’ll find compliments of each in a beautifully tailored design…
From the realm of water comes the TUKA TUMBLER – a mini ferris wheel made from turtle shells (or “tukas” in the Tamariki language) and the MAMA PEZAKI – a beautifully customized “rocking bus” ride that places guests inside a giant fish.
From the world of the air come the CAPULELE GLIDERS (with riders in butterflies), while the land of earth contributes the GOLAPA SPROUT (with rising woven baskets that swirl like fallen seeds). The grounds also feature the MURA FIRE DANCER – a family tower decorated with stylized tiki torches.
It makes sense for Tamariki to be the last guests first encounter when traveling counterclockwise around the park, as it serves as a stylistic prologue to the worlds that follow. But the road continues around the park to a completely different country…
Udara (Air)
In the mythology of the Lost Islands, Udara, or air, is the realm of inventors. Hitmen are seekers of knowledge, always looking to harness the power of the wind. The land is light and round, filled with white rocks that dot the landscape like clouds. But more importantly, there are several significant rides out there suitable for Udarans weightlessness and flight experiments…
It probably starts in the AVIARUM – a wind-powered playground of musical instruments and interactive content. It is a 100% accessible playground in the center of the grounds, with a kinetic propeller tower.
The land also has three recognizable attractions…
SKYBORNE is the launch tower of the S&S park, which propels guests up into the clouds in an ‘experiment’ of Udarans weightless technology. (The queue for this otherwise standard drop ride actually tells the story of the Udar realm in some lovely visuals, making it worth braving even for the drop-unsure.)
AMARA AVIATORS, meanwhile, is one of the park’s most unique flat rides, sending guests on a graceful, aerial ride where they actually use flapping wings to determine their own level of excitement. Keep the wings steady to glide gracefully, or experiment with their angle to rock, roll, or even flip your seat.
The main attraction of the country is NOPUKO: AIR COASTER. For coaster enthusiasts, it’s easily recognizable as the Vekoma Suspended Looping Coaster (SLC) which has been retrofitted with modern, more comfortable grips.
(Nopuko actually purchased Lost Island from another park. The ride originally operated at the now closed Ratanga Junction in South Africa. The park’s other large coaster was similarly purchased, transported and reinstalled in the park after a “first life” elsewhere. )
