The headlines are full of summer travel delays, lost luggage and airport strikes. However, there is hope. The trick to a successful European summer vacation this year is to work smarter, not harder. And luckily for Bostonians, we have options. With nearly 50 nonstop international destinations accessible through Logan Airport, there are ways to have a (relatively) stress-free summer vacation, and here are three ways to avoid summer travel hassles right now.
1) Connect through Iceland
With strikes at Heathrow, queues at the gates at Schiphol and unprecedented delays across the board, avoiding connecting flights in mainland Europe is a great way to defend against a ruined holiday. For Bostonians, a simple solution to this is to connect via Iceland. With Icelandair operating daily flights from Logan to Reykjavik, this is a smart option when trying to get to mainland Europe. Avoid the crowds at other major hubs and fly over Iceland for a much more peaceful experience. While Icelandair tends to have more affordable routes than many other major carriers, it also offers the option of a premium cabin. So, this summer, Icelandair is a great option for travelers looking to splurge and those just trying to get from point A to point B. The premium cabin is called “Saga Class.” Saga guests receive complimentary checked baggage, premium food and beverage on board, priority boarding, check-in and lounge access where available.
2) Skip the checked bags
One of the biggest problems at so many airports right now is lost or delayed checked baggage. So, even if you’re flying via Iceland, consider skipping checked baggage, because when you finally land at your destination in Europe, you may find that your luggage is lost or that you’ll have to wait several hours at baggage claim due to lack of staff.
3) Consider adding a buffer day to your trip
This summer is not the time for extremely harsh routes. Consider adding a spare day at the start of your trip if you are delayed and do not arrive immediately. The best way to do this is to not plan anything irreversible for the first day ie.
