(CNN) – A New Year equals a new perspective. Use this formula freely to plan travel in 2023.

After nearly three years of travel disruptions and problems, many countries have eased pandemic restrictions. People are moving abroad in large numbers, and there is a lot of demand-pent-up spread around the world.

International tourism was expected to reach 65% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, some destinations have recently reached a level of 85% or 90% of arrivals in 2019. And experts are cautiously optimistic about the continuation of travel.

Many travelers are charging for full airfare before the new year – with good reason.

Here are 23 travel tips from CNN Travel to get you started:

Poland

From the main square in Krakow, shown, to forests, lakes and mountains, Poland invites exploration. This may interest you : How Big is the Next Wide Receiver Contract?.

We can list new openings in Poland – like Hotel Verte, the new Autograph Collection building in Warsaw, which opened its doors (located in a charming Baroque palace) in August. But the reason you should visit Poland in 2023 is not for the chance to live in a place fit for empire. It is a show of solidarity with the country that also shows solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Sharing a 300-plus-mile border with the country under attack has meant that Poland has taken in more Ukrainian refugees than anywhere else. Add to that the declining tourism numbers (although they are rising again), and you have a tricky situation.

So whether you like the Warsaw palace, a city bursting with the likes of Krakow, Gdansk, Wrocław or Poznań – hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border – or escaping from it in the forests, lakes and mountains in the countryside — now is your chance to do well by taking a vacation. — Julia Buckley

On April 20, 2023, a solar eclipse will be visible in northwestern Australia.

For an event that will last just one minute, the town of Exmouth and the wider Ningaloo Peninsula have been planning for more than a year. There will be outdoor viewing platforms where spectators can safely view the solar wonder (with protective eyewear, of course) as well as musical performances, educational opportunities to learn about science and astronomy, and a three-day Dark Sky Festival.

But the state of Western Australia offers more than 60 seconds of wonder.

Covering a third of the entire continent of Australia, it stretches from the lively, growing city of Perth across deserts including the Great Victoria and Great Sandy to the wine country of the Margaret River, the dramatic Kimberley cliffs and the quokka-covered. Rottnest Island. — Lilith Marcus

Liverpool, England

England’s port city of Liverpool, best known around the world as the birthplace of The Beatles, is adding another chapter to its musical legacy. This may interest you : Sports Illustrated sets out “reasonable expectations” for Trevor Lawrence.

In May, it will be the host city for Eurovision 2023, the extravaganza of the song that will bring thousands of flag-waving fans from all over the continent. It is an opportunity for the city to come back after the humiliation of being stripped of its UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021.

In June, the city will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Liverpool Biennial of contemporary visual art, as more than 30 international and collective artists take up space in the city until September.

England is also marking the Year of the Beach in 2023, with food festivals and beach clean-ups taking place on the country’s beaches. Just half an hour from Liverpool city center by train, Crosby Beach is the permanent home of sculptor Antony Gormley’s “Another Place,” where 100 metal sculptures stand overlooking the sea. — Maureen O’Hare

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, a city of undeniably refined, historic beauty, is also looking closely at its troubled past.

Charleston features a past like no other US city, but it often shines a light on the history of its black residents. Steps have been taken to address that.

Enter the International African American Museum, which promises to make an opening announcement “as soon as possible” in 2023 after pushing back the January date. The museum will be located on the banks of the Cooper River in the area where many Africans first set foot in North America. It will explore the lives of slaves and their descendants.

Visitors in late May and early June can enjoy the world-famous Spoleto Festival with opera, theater, dance, musical performances and lectures by artists. And foodies should mark March 1-5 on the calendar for the Charleston Wine and Food Festival and sample Lowcountry favorites.

Can’t make the game? You will still be full. For a Southern fare, try Magnolias. Opened in 1990, it helped spur the city’s renaissance. For something more casual, try Bertha’s Kitchen in North Charleston, where brown rice and sausage, fried chicken and lima beans rule. The restaurant even caught the attention of “Roadfood” author Michael Stern. — Forrest Brown

Vilnius, Lithuania

The Vilnius independent admitted in an advertising campaign this year that no one really knows where it is. If their cute video didn’t make you want to book a trip right away, maybe this will: Lithuania’s capital celebrates its 700th anniversary on January 25, 2023.

To mark the special event, there is a program throughout the year, including music festivals and exhibitions. But use the anniversary as a reason to visit instead of following a religious program.

The center of the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – putting it up there with its fellow V-cities, Venice and Vienna. Vilnius makes it on the list due to its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, all located on an ancient street plan, but it is best known for its Baroque architecture.

Fiji

Such events await tourists in Fiji.

Sparkling blue water, huge coral reefs and hundreds of peaceful islands: Fiji is not a hard sell. But why go there in 2023? For one, the country only reopened post-Covid at the end of 2021, meaning that visitor numbers to the South Pacific paradise have yet to fully recover.

While the world has been plundered for its underwater beauty, take the opportunity to explore its above-ground treasures, too. A UNESCO World Heritage site is the town of Levuka, a former capital and important port, full of British colonial-era buildings among coconut and mango trees.

To learn about the local Indigenous communities, travelers can participate in a ceremony to welcome kava – a traditional drink among them – or enjoy lovo, a meal cooked over hot coals in an underground pit covered with banana leaves.

Fiji Airways now has direct flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco, making it easy to get to the islands. As the Fijians say, bula! — LM

Manaus, Brazil

As the future of the Amazon rainforest hangs in the balance, eco-lodges around Manaus – the capital of Brazil’s Amazonas state, and the gateway to the river – have used their pandemic pause to become more social.

Juma Amazon Lodge, about 50 miles south of the city, is now fully operational with a new $400,000 solar plant, the 268 panels of which hang about 40 feet above the canopy (meaning no trees had to be cut down). They also built a biogas system to increase the efficiency of organic waste, reducing annual carbon emissions by 8 tons.

Meanwhile, Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge, northwest of Manaus on the Rio Negro river, has opened a “highest” grade during the epidemic that is 30 miles from the main lodge and is only accessible by river.

Visitors can take long jungle walks through the home to jaguars, pumas and giant armadillos in one of the most remote Amazon hotel locations, then spend the afternoon in a hammock or by the pool. In 2023, the lodge is planning an overnight stay in a valley tent for small groups.

Thessaloniki, Greece

Tasteful attractions, history and proximity to beaches and mountains are just a few factors contributing to the popularity of the Greek city.

There has been no shortage of reasons to visit Greece’s second city recently, with a UNESCO-approved local food center that recently celebrated the renovation and reopening of the century-old Modiano food market.

Throw in a famous waterfront and close to beautiful beaches and mountains inland, Thessaloniki is definitely a contender for one of the best city breaks in Europe.

What could make it better? What about the shiny metro system? All being well, November 2023 should see the opening of the main line of the infrastructure megaproject that will finally connect the city center with the international airport. The driverless trains will draw passengers through towns with increased excavations to Thessaloniki’s already rich catalog of archaeological finds, many of which will be displayed in specially designed museum stations. — Barry Neild

Rwanda

January 2023 sees the official opening of the most exciting hotel in Rwanda at the moment: Sextantio Rwanda, a collection of socially-designed villas on an island on Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s largest lakes.

It is the first project outside of Italy for Daniel Kihlgren, whose part-hotel, living history projects preserve local culture. Sextantio sees tourists fishing on the 1,000-kilometer lake, rowing dugout canoes, trying banana beer and seeing wild animals — and not just chickens, cows, pigs and. goats wander around the place.

Of course, you want to see a gorilla. Associated with Volcanoes National Park, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund opened the 4,500-square meter Ellen DeGeneres Campus in 2022. Its visitor center includes exhibits, “meetings” of real gorillas and nature trails.

In Akagera National Park, white rhinos — relocated from South Africa in 2021 to help with conservation — are already giving birth. It’s easy to get there, too. Gothenburg, Sweden

Voted the world’s best place for six years running, Sweden’s second largest city is finally stepping out of Stockholm’s shadow.

Once the capital of trade and transport, Gothenburg is now considered one of the greenest places in Europe, with 274 square meters (2,950 square feet) of green space per resident, while 95% of its hotels are certified.

Although Gothenburg officially reached 400 in 2021, the celebrations have been put on hold due to the global pandemic. But it’s happening in 2023, so it’s a good time to visit.

Sweden’s King, Carl XVI Gustav, who celebrates 50 years on the throne this year, will be in town on June 4, Gothenburg’s birthday, and a major festival commemorating the city is being held in the Frihamnen port district from June 2 to 5, with concerts. and art activities among the activities offered.

The celebrations will continue throughout the summer until September 3 starting with the Göteborgsvarvet Marathon, a new 26 mile race following on from the city’s famous half marathon, which will be held on May 13. — Tamara Hardingham-Gill

Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates

Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates

Dhayah Fort in Ras al-Khaimah is one of the few remaining hilltops in the United Arab Emirates.

When travelers think of the United Arab Emirates, the beautiful skyline of Dubai often comes to mind.

But the UAE has a lot to offer nature lovers too – especially the northern emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, which is hoping to become the most sustainable place in the Middle East by 2025 thanks to the “Balanced Tourism” strategy.

Just 45 minutes from Dubai, it is often called the “adventure Emirate,” and for good reason. Offering beaches, deserts and mountains, many outdoor attractions, such as sand boarding, trekking, wakeboarding, skydiving, scuba diving and even the longest zipline in the world.

But it’s not all about the adrenaline rush. Ras Al Khaimah is home to the best restaurant in the United Arab Emirates, 1484 by Puro, nestled in the Emirate’s Jebel Jais Mountains. Culture seekers can head to the historic Dhayah Fort, which dates back to the Late Bronze Age (1600-1300 BC).

Sharing borders with Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Myanmar, Laos has long been a must-see destination for frequent travelers traveling through the Southeast Asian region.

But now, thanks to the 2021 opening of half-height rail, it’s easier than ever to get around the country quickly, shaving hours off journeys that used to take full days to travel.

You still have to make some tough decisions – there’s a lot to see in Laos.

Karst peaks await visitors to the tourist-haven Vang Vieng, while UNESCO-listed Luang Prabang is filled with French-colonial heritage, Buddhist culture and natural beauty. (Classic seekers will want to look into the Rosewood Luang Prabang, with its charming hilltop tents)

Gruyères, Switzerland

Rolling hills, ancient buildings — and officially the world’s best cheese. Welcome to Gruyères, Switzerland.

Everywhere you look in this small, hilltop town, there’s a picture-perfect view — from the central market to the turreted 13th-century castle. A day trip is possible from Geneva, summer promises many hiking opportunities, while winter allows going to the nearby Moléson-sur-Gruyères ski resort.

To taste the names of Gruyères from the age, stop at the wood-paneled Chalet de Gruyères. And to learn how the cheese makers perfect this quality, go to La Maison du Gruyère factory. For more culinary delights, there’s the Maison Cailler chocolate factory — from the outside it looks like something out of a Wes Anderson movie, inside it offers a glimpse into the secrets of Swiss chocolate making.

Gruyères is also home to the surreal HR Giger Museum, celebrating the work of the famous Swiss artist after the eponymous alien in the 1979 film “Alien.” A drink at the museum’s bar, designed by Giger in an eerie skeletal aesthetic, provides an antidote to Gruyères’ fairytale vibe. — Francesca Street

Minneapolis, Minnesota

A contemporary Indigenous restaurant in Minneapolis has received one of the highest honors in the world, and it is not alone in spotlighting Native communities in the region.

At Owamni, who won a James Beard Award for best new restaurant, traditional ingredients — trout, bison, potatoes and more — create a “decolonized” menu where things like wheat flour and beef are absent. The restaurant is a collaboration between chef Sean Sherman, an Oglala Lakota and Dana Thompson, who is of Wahpeton-Sisseton and Mdewakanton Dakota descent.

One of the couple’s projects, the Indigenous Food Lab, is planning to open a market in February in Minneapolis’ Midtown Global Market, a former Sears building that houses businesses representing more than 20 cultures.

The open-air Sisters Children Farmers Market (Thursday June to October) also focuses on Indigenous products. And at the Minnesota History Center in neighboring St. Paul, the exhibit “Our Home: Native Minnesota” looks at thousands of years of Native history in the state. — Marnie Hunter

Bogotá, Colombia

Although the busy capital city of Colombia can be crowded, it is also home to the historic La Candelaria.

Caribbean coastal areas such as the Rosario archipelago or the UNESCO heritage city of Cartagena are at the top of many Colombians’ travel wishes, but also worth a look-in is the unknown capital of the country Bogotá.

Yes, it’s a dirty, traffic-infested town, but it’s also a high-end crucible of culture and food. There are tours that show the city’s transformation from wild west graffiti to amazing street art galleries.

Equally colorful are the restaurants that make the most of Colombian flora on menus that range from delicious peasant dishes to Michelin-level gastronomy. And then there’s coffee!

The congestion (except for regular days-only days) thins quickly outside of it, allowing day trips to see the riches of history and modernity. Routes include Lake Guatavita, where pirates once looted sunken gold offerings left by the local Muisca people, or the great underground Zipaquirá salt cathedral. — BN

Mustang Valley, Nepal

Famous for trekking along ancient routes that once carried trade between the Himalayas and India, Nepal’s stunning Mustang Valley sits at the gateway to Tibet.

Expect to hear more about this remote location in the coming months thanks to the arrival of the soon-to-be unveiled Shinta Mani Mustang. Part of the Bensley Collection, this all-inclusive resort located above the small town of Jomsom in Lower Mustang will offer luxury seekers 29 suites inspired by traditional Tibetan homes.

In addition to hiking, Mustang visitors can explore ancient villages and Buddhist monasteries. Also not to be missed, the man-made Mustang Caves live on the Gandaki River and are filled with 2,000-year-old Buddha images and paintings.

Going to Mustang Valley is part of the experience. Travelers will have to take a 25-minute flight from the capital Kathmandu to Pokhara and then take another 20-minute flight to Jomsom. The views alone may make this option more appealing to some than the other route — a 12-hour drive from Kathmandu. — KC

Tanzania

From beautiful wildlife to beautiful national parks and beaches, Tanzania is overflowing with visual beauty.

The East African country has a seemingly endless list of wonders, with Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Serengeti National Park, and the Zanzibar Archipelago, among the many highlights.

This year, flag carrier Air Tanzania will open new routes to West and Central Africa, as well as the UK, in an effort to transform the country’s main airport in Dar es Salaam into a cargo and cargo hub, while building the country’s first route. is also scheduled to begin.

GEM will be the largest museum dedicated to one civilization, costing a billion dollars and holding the entire King Tut collection. Watch a video here of CNN’s inside tour.

If you arrive in Cairo before it opens, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square may still scratch your old itch.

While the Pyramids of Giza are the city’s tour-de-force, there is still more to see. Start with Islamic Cairo. This area has one of the largest collections of historical Islamic buildings in the world. While there, visit the Al-Azhar mosque, which dates back to the 970s.

The city also has a rich Christian tradition. Coptic Cairo, part of Old Cairo, has a number of Christian settlements that predate the arrival of Islam.

If you want a break from Cairo’s cacophony, Al Azhar Park has a beautiful green space and a design inspired by the history of Islamic gardens. And the rich community of Zamalek, which sits on an island in the Nile River, serves restaurants, antique shops and luxury hotels. — FB

Naoshima, Japan

Yayoi Kusama has the distinction of being the world’s best-selling female artist. In particular, he has become an international icon for his sculptures of giant polka-dotted pumpkins, one of which was returned to the pier of Naoshima, one of Japan’s “art islands” in 2022 after it washed into the sea last year.

However, Naoshima is much more than the famous yellow gourd or its works with Kusama.

There are five small, floating “art islands” in the Seto Inland Sea, located between the main islands of Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku in southeastern Japan. The largest collection of sights — not to mention the hotel itself — is on Naoshima. Together, five are modern and contemporary masters, with an emphasis on Japanese artists.

Don’t come here expecting calligraphy and other traditional forms. Instead, marvel at Tadao Ando’s huge stone monoliths, a small room where customers can’t listen except for the heartbeat of the people, the sound of wind created inside a wooden house and an exhibition where jumping and bathing are meant to be a part. of technical knowledge. — LM

Belize

With direct flights to Belize City from a dozen North American airports, this Central American country is a low-cost destination for many travelers during the peak season of November to April.

Most tourists head to Belize’s Caribbean coastline. The country’s largest island, Ambergris Caye, sits next to the Belize Barrier Reef – the second largest coral reef system. Margaritaville Beach Resort is set to open on the island in early 2023, and the “eco-luxury” resort Alaia Belize is set to open in 2021.

Farther south, the Great Blue Hole — a huge underwater hole — is an underwater magnet for both scuba divers and aerial photographers.

But Belize offers way more than its island attractions.

Rain forests, caves, winding rivers and rich Mayan archaeological sites invite exploration in a country with a tourism program that has been in place since 2012. The ruins of the Mayan city of Altun Ha are about an hour north of Belize City. To the west, Lamanai is one of Belize’s largest and most interesting Mayan sites. — MH

Oaxaca, Mexico

Mexico is arguably as rich in culinary heritage as it is in Mesoamerican archaeological treasures, and Eva Longoria explores many different flavors in her series “Discovering Mexico,” which will air on CNN in 2023.

The region of Oaxaca, visited by Longoria, has a very deep well of culinary traditions. Additionally, Oaxaca produces the world’s most mezcal.

Tlayudas, known as Oaxacan pizzas, are street food. A large corn tortilla is usually covered with oil, beans, traditional Oaxacan cheese, pork and other garnishes such as avocado and tomato. The country is also known for its seven sources of mole, whose recipes can call for a wide range of ingredients from chiles and sesame seeds to chocolate and dried fruit.

In Oaxaca City, the Mercado Benito Juárez is one of the many markets throughout the state selling items such as dried chiles, fresh produce, handicrafts and grasshoppers. To capture the country’s increasingly popular drink, the town of Santiago Matatlán is the location for a mezcal distillery tour and tasting. — MH

Ottawa, Canada

During the winter, the frozen Rideau Canal in Ottawa becomes the world’s largest skating rink.

It doesn’t have Montreal’s French flair or Toronto’s international oomph, so Canada’s capital can be overlooked. That would be a mistake. Graceful and down to earth, Ottawa has its own draw.

Music lovers should take note of the two Ottawa Jazz Festivals. There is a winter edition on February 2-3. If you can’t handle the cold, there is a summer edition June 23-30.

If you like hockey, watch the Ottawa Senators do their NHL thing at the Canadian Tire Center in the western suburbs. If this ticket is too expensive, check out the Ottawa 67’s, an affordable option for junior men’s hockey games at the downtown TD Field Arena.

The Rideau Canal turns into the world’s largest skating rink from sometime in January until late February or early March, depending on the thickness of the ice. It’s free and available 24/7. When it’s warm, it’s a great place to people watch and watch the boats.

Uganda

The drive through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is among Uganda’s best.

Shaked Schwartz/Moment RF/Getty Images

There is a big change taking place in Uganda’s tourism offering at this time as the East African country is looking beyond the traditional safari and wildlife to attract local and international tourists.

Wanting to revive post-Covid tourism in all corners of the world, not only the big-ticket businesses that offer rich tourists a view of the Five Beasts or mountain gorillas, has turned to marketing some of its qualities.

And why? From the expansive shores of Lake Victoria to the snowy Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda is a great wilderness destination, with adventure opportunities including trekking through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or reaching the canyons of the Virunga volcano chain or whitewater rafting along the Victoria Nile.

There is also an emphasis on connecting tourists with Ugandan communities — ensuring a taste of Ugandan food, music and culture. Last year saw the launch of the Uganda Cycling Trail, a 1,600-kilometer unpaved 22-step route designed to appeal to all levels of cyclists from serious solo bikepackers to well-guided easy riders. — BN
