As air travel has returned to levels previously experienced in the past several months, airports and airlines have struggled to keep up with increased demand. CBS News has obtained a letter sent by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to JetBlue Airways in which he called the frequent delays in taking off and landing in the United States “unacceptable.”

In Thursday’s letter, Buttigieg said he had written to nine of the country’s largest airlines.

According to the letter, an estimated 24% of domestic flights are delayed and 3.2% canceled in the first half of 2022.

To help customers, the Department of Transportation is creating a website — scheduled to go live before Labor Day weekend — that will clearly show each airline’s cancellation, delay and refund policies, if said Buttigieg.

“When passengers experience cancellations and delays, they deserve clear, meaningful information on the actions your airline will provide to address the costs and problems that result from these incidents,” Buttigieg said.

He also called on the airlines to provide food vouchers for customers whose delays exceed three hours, and to provide accommodation for those who will spend the night due to interference with their flight which is “under the control of the company” .”

“Regardless of the reason for the delay or cancellation, the Ministry expects airlines to provide timely customer service and customer satisfaction during and after the flight,” said the secretary.

In response to the letter, the industry group American Airlines said in a statement that U.S. airlines are facing a number of challenges as a result of the outbreak, including a “tight labor market.” But, he said, the airlines are ready to work with the Department of Transportation, and they are working in accordance with federal laws.

A4A notes that in 2020 and 2021, U.S. airlines provided a total of $21.8 billion in cash to their customers.

A4A also said that weather conditions and the country’s airspace system caused 63% of flight cancellations in the first five months of 2022. Airlines have also cut their summer schedules to ensure they can rely on their customers.

“Carriers strive to provide the highest level of customer service and look forward to working with the DOT to continue to provide transparency to the traveling public,” A4A wrote.

CBS News has reached out to several major U.S. airlines for comment. Alaska, American, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest and United have all issued orders for the A4A announcement.
