SAN ANTONIO — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared to handle an increase in the number of travelers who will fly out of San Antonio International Airport (SAT) and other airports in South Texas as the volume of trips this month and in the summer.
Typically, from late May through Labor Day weekend, the TSA sees a sustained period of higher checkpoint volume. During the global pandemic, passenger volume fell dramatically. This year, the TSA expects travel volume to rebound and leisure, business and international travel to show signs of recovery. TSA officers across the country currently screen approximately 2.2 million people daily, which is a significant increase from last year.
“We have started to see a higher volume of travelers at airport security checkpoints,” said Jes Presas, TSA Federal Security Director for San Antonio. “Travel volume here at SAT is at almost 100% of pre-pandemic levels, and regionally, it’s at the same percentage. Nationwide, we expect to see travel rebound to near or above pre-pandemic levels this summer. South Texas airports are likely to be busier than we’ve seen in a long time.”
Due to the increased volume of passengers, “my advice is to arrive at the airport two hours before your scheduled flight,” Presas said. “Keep in mind that many people haven’t flown in a long time and have forgotten a lot of our security protocols, which means it’s taking a little longer to screen travelers.”
As local residents fly from SAT Airport to other locations, they may come across airports that have cutting-edge new technologies installed, such as credential authentication technology, which checks the validity of someone’s ID, and scanners. three-dimensional CT scans that provide TSA officials with a clear 360-degree X-ray image of the contents of someone’s carry-on bags. “Travellers unfamiliar with these technologies should listen to the guidance TSA officers provide because they can help you navigate through the latest cutting-edge technologies that are new to you,” Presas said.
The TSA no longer requires travelers to wear masks, however they remain optional and a TSA officer will ask a traveler wearing a mask to remove it momentarily to verify that the person’s face matches the face on their ID.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the agency is still allowing travelers to bring up to a 12-ounce container of liquid hand sanitizer per passenger in carry-on luggage until further notice. Passengers can expect that these containers larger than the standard 3.4-ounce allowance of liquids allowed through a checkpoint will need to be checked separately, which will add some time to your checkpoint experience.
