The United States, along with our international partners, is urging the government of Kosovo to extend the implementation period of the new license plate system. Kosovo has the right to implement the license plate system under the Brussels Convention, but the extension of time is in the interest of making progress in EU-facilitated negotiations to normalize Kosovo-Serbia relations. The United States is disappointed and concerned that the government of Kosovo has rejected requests from its international partners. Kosovo and Serbia must work quickly and flexibly to reach a comprehensive agreement on normal relations, based on mutual recognition. It is important for both parties to reduce their rhetoric and take concrete actions to demonstrate their commitment to effective cooperation to ensure a stable and prosperous future for the region.
