Oregon has lost nearly a thousand high school sports officials in the past few years — a 30 percent drop. One of the reasons for the decline is the abuses by the authorities against parents and other fans of the game, which only increased during the disaster. Almost every region of the country has a similar shortage.
Camron Rust is president of the Portland Basketball Officials Association. He said it was not a good environment for the fans or the players.
“No one should feel unsafe there or feel attacked, whether it’s the other team’s players or the officials or anyone in the facility. It’s just not appropriate for the game to rise to that level of intensity.”
Rust said that in the last two seasons, he has had to ask schools to move 20-25% of their games. But that means officials trying to cover all those games have to work harder. He said burning is a real concern.
“And that’s only going to snowball into a bigger problem. If we burn people out, more people are going to leave, and the problem is going to get worse down the road. That’s what I’m afraid of.”
Rust says parents and supporters need to be taught the importance of being involved constructively. And he hopes salary increases over the next two years will help recruit new high school athletic officials.
