Activism Fair at Manny’s

Manny’s, 3092 16th Street Friday, July 29 | Free of charge This may interest you : Arts on the Green list return to Crystal Lake Church.

Sometimes liking an Instagram infographic isn’t enough to make the shifts you want to see in the world. There are many battles to be fought, such as climate change, the right to legal abortion, and the number of hate crimes, to name a few.

“Rage can be turned into a powerful energy. We’ve grieved. We’ve watched in disbelief. We’ve just cried because everything is gone,” said Precious Green, director of programming at Manny’s. we have not given up on ourselves, we can do something.”

One place you can do this in San Francisco is Manny’s. Since 2017, the Mission Cafe has been a community space for civic engagement—think Manny’s as a San Francisco stakeholder living room, but with artists, politicians, and activists sitting on the couches. This Friday, the Manny’s team is hosting their first major Activism Fair. There are over 10 local organizations that provide advice on advocating for different issues and communities. And that’s not it. There will be live music and a Moody Goose Vintage Thrift Shop. Attendees can shop, listen to music and amplify their voices.

Angelina Polsell, 22, Manny’s event manager, has always been told to go vote, “but there’s a lot more to making a difference than voting.”

Activism is practical – it requires collective energy to campaign, disrupt and reform political and social beliefs that do not serve the interests of the community as a whole. San Francisco is known for standing up for what’s right, but if you’re new to the city, you might not know where to start, and that’s where Manny’s Activism Fair steps in.

Queer Pasts and Futures: Experimental Films with Việt Lê + TT Takemoto

Virtual Thursday, July 28, 6-7:30 p.m. | 5 dollars

The Asian Art Museum is showing films by California College of the Arts luminaries TT Takemoto and Việt Lê. Based on their shared queer identity with strong ties to the East Asian and Southeast Asian diaspora, the filmmakers play with archival footage and use experimental cinema to subvert how queer people have historically been portrayed in the media. Shots taken from the filmmakers’ creations show androgynous figures in floor-length chromatic skirts, metallic armbands and white petaled gowns gliding beneath industrial cement columns. A fusion of futurism and fashion, the costumes suggest a world where queer people are intimately and fantastically cut off from time and space. (BF)
