And at least two major festivals, the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Tanglewood in Berkshires and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York, are actually outside in abundance. open recreation areas (or, even more open space, in the grass behind the seats). Please stay safe and enjoy the wide variety of summer programs.

Tanglewood

Lenox | July 8-Aug. 28

Our country’s most popular summer music festival is a two-hour drive from Boston (traffic is free), and this summer’s program is full of fun. Though I must admit, I do not enjoy the first night of Tanglewood (July 8) more than the events that followed. Leonard Bernstein was an important figure in Tanglewood, and although I love his Broadway music, I’m not a big fan of his powerful concert music, and the opening night will have features two important ones: his last instrumental song, “The Opening Prayer. See the article : Putting Music on Film.,” in Hebrew, by baritone Jack Canfield, and his first “The Age of Anxiety” Symphony (started by BSO and Bernstein himself with the keyboard – pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will be the guest piano here). The concert will end with what many people (including me) consider to be Stravinsky’s most beautiful musical instrument of the 20th century. One time when I heard BSO music director Andris Nelsons lead it, he did something I thought was impossible – he made it sound dull. I hope not anymore.

Tanglewood concerts that I really enjoyed start soon after. The following program is for all Americans, featuring the well-known and extraordinary works of Samuel Barber, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and a new designer based in Washington, D.C. Carlos Simon. I’m not acquainted with the singers – soprano Nicole Cabell and piano Aaron Diehl – but it all sounds pretty fun (July 9). And the next concert (July 10) includes a new BSO commission, a “night-sky-blue trumpet concert,” by one of my favorite new composers, Helen Grime, with Swedish trumpet player Håkan Hardenberger. This will be completed with a book by Nelsons directing Rachmaninoff, the excellent “Vocalise” and his lesser-known, lesser-known Symphony.

One of the highlights of the summer (July 16) will be Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” one-night concert, where Nelsons host a variety of young American actors (including returning Nicole Cabell ” and Donna Elvira).

The annual Beethoven Ninth Symphony, which always closes the Tanglewood season (Aug. 28), will feature a special guest tourist this year, BSO alum Michael Tilson Thomas, who recently left the San Francisco music system Symphony. The concert will begin with another favorite composer by Tilson Thomas, Ives, whose unusual song “Psalm 90” is short.

The much-anticipated Tanglewood event every summer is the Modern Music Festival (Aug. 5-8), last year under the direction of the esteemed Tanglewood Music Center director Ellen Highstein. The FCM weekend will feature a silent music program recently created by FCM staff, with the final event being prominent British composer George Benjamin directing the first American episode of his latest opera, “The Lessons of Love and Violence” scary. is based on the tragic story of Edward II, his wife and his beloved husband.

And Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band will be Tanglewood Sept. 5. What more could a person want in a summer party?

Aston Magna Music Festival

Waltham and Great Barrington (also Hudson, New York) | June 23-July 23

For almost three decades, high-profile flute player Daniel Stepner has hosted this summer festival in particular but not just the original music. This year, it takes place at Brandeis University, Waltham and Hudson, New York, and at two Great Barrington sites. Each of the next three concerts has something hard to resist. Soon there is a program called “The Devil in Stories,” featuring the devilish singer Scarlatti oratorio and Stravinsky’s theater non-fiction theater, “Soldier Tale” (featuring a major violin solo role). The guest singers are Kristen Watson of soprano and tenor Frank Kelly (June 23-25). There is also a music program for Clara and Robert Schumann’s room (June 30-July 2). And a program called “Double Apotheosis,” featuring the music of Couperin, Corelli and Rebel (July 21-23). My biggest anticipation (July 14-16) is the Handel program featuring Canadian soprano singer Dominique Labelle, who is rarely heard in this part of the world.

Berkshire Opera Festival

Great Barrington and Pittsfield (and Chatham, New York) | July 21-Aug. 26

If the “Don Giovanni” concert does not satisfy you, near Tanglewood, Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, the popular Berkshire Opera Festival presents a full version (Aug. 20, 23 and 26). The summer season begins with Jake Heggie’s “Three Decembers,” based on a play about Broadway and family secrets by Terrance McNally (at PS21, Pavilion Theater, Chatham, New York, July 21 and 23). And perhaps the most interesting thing is “Up in the Mountains,” putting an unusual light on opera music by Black composers (Aug. To see also : Three local exhibits to look out for at the Utah Art Festival. 10, at the Berkshire Pittsfield Museum – free tickets, but reservations are required).

Rockport Chamber Music Festival

Rockport | Through July 10

By the time you read this, you are already missing out on some of the fun programs at this prestigious music festival, at the beloved Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, with great scenery of Rockport Harbor. But I will pick a few of the upcoming concerts that are particularly interesting and I suggest that there is probably not a single program that is worth the trip. Let’s start with the popular soprano Dawn Upshaw doing an interesting program with the Brentano String Quartet with music dealing with the sad story of Dido, the Queen of Carthage abandoned by Aeneas, the Prince of Troy and the founder of the Roman Empire. Read also : Moncus Park is hosting a party to celebrate the summer and National Food Truck Day. The first episode begins with an English-language song leading to the famous Dido song from Purcell’s opera “Dido and Aeneas,” and the second half features a single piece called “Dido Reimagined” by composer Melinda Wagner in Stephanie Fleischmann’s libretto. (July 2). There is also a talented pianist Kirill Gerstein, in an inspired program that begins with Stravinsky’s Piano Sonata in which he played the piano Sonata with a small F-sharp, followed by the well-known C-minor Sonata of Schubert, ‘ and closed with Liszt’s “Bénédiction de Dieu dans Soli”. and his famous Piano Sonata (July 7).

The excellent Dover Quartet plays a string of Mozart and Ravel strings, and violin and festival director Barry Shiffman joins them for Dvorak’s “American” Quintet (July 9). And the party comes to an end with trumpet blasts Jens Lindemann and pianist Stewart Goodyear in the evening dedicated to Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, and others (July 10). ).

Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival

Cotuit, Chatham, Wellfleet, Eastham and Dennis | Aug. 2-19

At various venues around Cape Town, festival organizers Jon Manasse (clarinet) and Jon Nakamatsu (piano) perform on their own and others bring us room celebrating rooms, including Ariel Quartet (Cotuit, Aug. 2 ), Verona Quartet (Chatham, Aug. 3), Ying Quartet (self, Cotuit, Aug. 9, and pianist Brian Zeger, Brahms Piano Quintet, Wellfleet, Aug. 12) and Borromeo Quartet (Dennis, Aug. 17). The beloved Borromeos play the quartet of Jamaican designer Eleanor Alberga (born 1949 but new to me) and Beethoven who lifts seven-legged hair back the Quartet with a little C-sharp.

NEIGHBORING STATES

Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Saratoga Springs, New York | July 10-Aug. 21

Across the country, not far from Tanglewood, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is home to the summer New York City Ballet, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In the summer, pairs of music programs will be played Sunday and evening at Pitney Meadows Community Farm (July 10, July 17, Aug. 14 and Aug. 21).

At the New York City Ballet, you not only see unique dances, but you can also hear beautiful pieces of masterpieces — especially those composed by George Balanchine — which you rarely hear in the hall of concert. This summer, the NYCB programs include one of Balanchine’s celestial works, “Chaconne,” to Gluck’s “Dance of the Blessed Souls” from “Orfeo ed Euridice” (Orpheus and Euridice mythology translated into ballet accompanied by a 20-minute celebration), with Hindemith’s universal “The Four Temperaments”, as well as Morton Feldman and Philip Glass’ musical dances, and the dazzling Balanchine “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Mendelssohn’s memorable music (July 12-16).

The great Philadelphia Orchestra (also the Metropolitan Opera music director), Yannick Nézet-Séguin, will be conducting only 12 SPAC concerts for the orchestra, so you will have to hear singer Yo-Yo Ma dances for Villa-Lobos. “Bachianas Brasileiras” No. 5 le Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 without him (Aug. 5). But you can hear Nézet-Séguin accompanying the beautiful Met soprano singer Angel Blue singing Samuel Barber and Valerie Coleman on the show with Dvořák Seventh Symphony (Aug. 12) and Beethoven’s Third, Fifth and Ninth Symphonies (the latter also -and Ms. Blue), and an interesting selection of other concert sections (Aug. 10, 11, and 13).

Glimmerglass Opera

Cooperstown, New York | July 8-Aug. 21

One of America’s leading opera companies only performs in the summer, and the two long-running productions this summer are a different study. Before the advent of Bizet’s “Carmen” (July 16-Aug. 21), one of the most popular operas of all time, without a dull message in the whole game — opera singing by a woman who controls her life, even if. meaning that he may have to die for that choice. This production is hosted by one of the most famous Carmens of our time, mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves (joint production with Minnesota Opera). I have never heard of the young mezzo-soprano Briana Hunter in the title role, but her highlights include singing it at several opera companies and appearing in the latest Met “Fire Shut Up in My Met” Bones “by Terence Blanchard.

I laugh at another long-term work of Glimmerglass sharing a calendar with “Carmen.” It’s “The Sound of Music” by Rodgers and Hammerstein, almost non-“Carmen” works – like “Carmen” – like imaginary works (the young boy left the call of at home to marry a widow who has many children whom she will teach to sing.). No, I think there is something to be said about the variety. It is a joint production of the Houston Grand Opera (big opera?) And is presented by Francesca Zambello, director of the Glimmerglass Festival, with whom I often meet edgier works (July 8-Aug. 19).

Other operas at Glimmerglass this summer include “Tenor Overboard”, comedy comedy “Nkalima Tenor” Ken Ludwig, Rossini’s music (July 19-Aug. 18), and two operas plays. -Kamala Sankaram and Jerre Dye’s “Take the Snakes” and Lila Palmer’s more humorous film “Holy Ground”, described on the site as “suspended from the jokes of comedy and humor” (July 29-Aug .20). There is also a children’s opera, “The Jungle Book” by Sankaram and Kelley Rourke (Aug. 4-8) and a new play, “The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson,” by Sandra Seaton featuring Carlos Simon, about the founder of The National Negro Opera Company, owned by Denyce Graves (Aug. 15-16).

Bard SummerScape 2022

Annandale-on-Hudson, New York | June 23-Aug. 14

Bard College’s annual summer festival includes theater, dance, opera and in-depth exploration of single music. Opera is often unavailable, and this year it is Bard president Leon Botstein who is directing one of Richard Strauss’ most recent operas, “Die Schweigsame Frau” (“The Silent Woman,” 1935), featuring and libretto of Austrian writer / playwright Stefan Zweig. in Ben Jonson’s 1609 jokes (July 22-31).

The singer who is the subject of concerts, lectures and group discussions is virtuoso pianist and renowned composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Rarely has he been taken as seriously as he would be in Bard (Aug. 5-14).

Newport Classical Music Festival

Newport, Rhode Island | July 1-17

This popular festival, with many concerts taking place in the old Newport houses, features a wide range of rooms and programs including opera (“La Boheme” never performed) and solo instruments. Several well-known manufacturers have already sold out. But there are still $ 200 and $ 250 tickets for the event I would really enjoy, the upcoming “Cocktails and Concert” and German-Canadian phoneticist Johannes Moser joining the Canadian pianist- America Marc-André Hamelin ho. program by Nadia Boulanger, Hamelin (some of the piano songs himself), Debussy and Franck, at Redwood Library & amp; Athenaeum (July 16).

Marlboro Music

Marlboro, Vermont | July 16-Aug. 14

At Marlboro Music, music celebrities are joined by younger and / or lesser-known actors in unregistered programs. But these concerts are so popular that at the time of writing, unsafe seats (there are only unsafe seats) for only four of the 10 concerts this year are still available. So if you are planning a trip to Vermont, before you do anything else, check to see if there are any tickets left. We have been promised that there will be a waiting list.
