The Richland Academy of Arts has appointed Michael Benson as its new executive director.
Benson, a professional national music teacher with a doctorate in music technology, is a Lexington resident. The first day he started working was Monday.
Benson’s state-of-the-art technology, combined with a deep interest in education and community engagement, will help advance the mission of the organization celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, according to a statement.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Benson as our new executive director,” said Brian Hamilton, president of the Richland Academy Board of Directors. “It brings experience, passion, communication skills and new perspectives to the College.”

Benson took over as executive director this month following the retirement of its founder and first director Marianne Cooper after 30 years of service.
Benson has worked as a music professor, director of key studies, and director of the Malone University Program at Malone University for the past 11 years. He served eight years as head of the music department and completed his two-year term as head of teaching in May 2019. He worked at the Smithsonian Center, Steinway Hall in New York, and in Chicago at Preston Bradley Hall on Dame Myra Hess Memorial. The Concert series has also contributed to many published stories. His teaching experience spanned from Interlochen Summer Camps in Texas to Ohio State Lima, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, University of Oakland (MI) and Carl Sandburg College in Illinois prior to his time at Malone University. In the autumn of 2001, he was invited to teach piano, piano, and group piano as a specialist at JiMei University in Xiamen, People’s Republic of China.
He continues to be active at the Ohio Musicians Association (OhioMTA) where he serves as president of Buckeye Auditions and host. He also served OhioMTA as the state chair for the piano certification and was the chairman of the Northwest District for two terms and the Buckeye Auditions Chairman of the Northwest and Midwest Districts. Other offices include serving a two-term term as Middle East commissioner to ensure professionalism, according to the statement.
He completed his term as vice president to become a member of the OhioMTA executive committee in 2018. Currently, he serves as a member of the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education.

Benson holds a bachelor’s degree in piano from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University where he studied piano with Robert Roux PhD. He holds a master’s degree in music and a master’s degree in music technology from the University of Texas at Austin where he studied piano and piano with Professor Martha Hilley, Sophia Gilmson and Nancy Garrett.
Benson Denise’s wife teaches high school math and trains Lexington High School boys and girls in overseas teams. They have a son.
