In 2017, Conan Gray burst onto the pop scene with his self-released EP, “Sunset Season,” a bittersweet ode to growing up in a small town.

Since then, his music has only grown in popularity with the release of his debut album, “Kid Krow,” which shot to meteoric fame thanks to painstakingly linked hits like “Heather” and “Maniac” that exploded on TikTok.

With no signs of stopping, Gray has just released his sophomore album, “Superache,” to similar success, and for good reason.

“Superache” draws on Conan Gray’s strength — his ability to capture universal experiences within a catchy chorus with a memorable song. In “Kid Krow,” he uses it to tell a twisted love story — not one about breakups and reconciliations, but a salute to those unhappily in love, those stuck in relationships they know aren’t good for them, and those left behind .

“Superache” goes a step further, exploring the less obvious but equally painful parts of falling in and out of love. On songs like “Memories,” Gray sings about trying to move on from a toxic relationship that was punctuated by “Kid Krow.”

His choice to delve into the relationship as something to learn from and grow from—rather than a stagnant, painful thing—shows a new maturity not only in Gray’s music but also in his view of love.

Other songs like “People Watching” are much closer to Gray’s old music — a sweet, hopeful song with a bitter undercurrent.

Through the song, and frankly much of his discography, Gray reveals his true romantic ideals and how he yearns to fall in love, but in “People Watching” he reveals that he knows his own fear of heartbreak is the only thing holding him back.

Compared to “Crush Culture” on his debut EP, “People Watching” shows a new level of self-reflection in Gray’s music.

Unlike the angry look in “Crush Culture” where Gray warns himself and his listeners that love is cheap, fake and dangerous, “People Watching” shows an evolution in thinking and a more nuanced view of such a complicated subject as love.

Finally, “Family Line” — a song with a very different theme and vibe than the rest of the album — deals with Gray’s traumatic family history, a topic he avoided addressing directly back in his YouTube days in 2015.

With an unforgettable chorus, Gray laments how he feels like he’s just a combination of his family and his trauma.

The song is about how trauma, especially at a young age, reshapes how he sees his entire life and how your family feels like something you can never escape.

With “Family Line” in mind, Gray’s entire discography can be seen in a new light.

Stories of toxic relationships, unrequited love, and hometown escape take on another dimension through the lens of “Family Line” — making it a powerful song not just for “Superache,” but for Gray’s entire discography.

All in all, “Superache” is an incredible album — not only for its musical merits, but also for the sheer amount of evolution Gray manages to display over the span of twelve songs. Some parts feel repetitive and seem almost like they could just be a sequel to “Kid Krow”.

However, given how relatively new Gray is to stardom and the music scene, as well as the remarkable progress he’s already made, there’s no doubt that the only direction his career can go is up.
