The E-Crossover relies on smart pixel LED headlights in a unique design

, / PRNewswire / -The new Volvo C40 relies on LED lighting technology from Wieselburg -based automotive specialist ZKW. The all-electric crossover main light has a pixel module and 84 controllable LEDs each. High -tech lights illuminate the road particularly efficiently, adjusting dynamically to traffic and avoiding other road users. Front cameras and radar permanently scan the road, allowing up to five vehicles to be evacuated at once. The unique high -quality pixel LED light design: a hammer -shaped light arc sets a visual accent that is typical for Volvo. “For Volvo, we develop distinctive light designs that are impressed with their innovative technology and memorable appearance and improve road safety,” explains Dr. Wilhelm Steger, CEO of ZKW Group.

Smart LED pixel lights The lights on the new C40 combine daytime running lights, position lights and turn signal lights in a particularly compact form. Adaptive lighting systems with cameras and radar sensors guarantee a high level of road safety by optimally illuminating the road without oncoming traffic. This is achieved by individually controlled LEDs combined in a pixel module. The front camera and radar eyes detect the vehicle or vehicles coming in front and enable or disable the LED lights on the headlamp pixel module via the control unit. Despite the compact dimensions of the front headlamp, the system achieves high light output. Unique LED lights were developed in Wieselburg, where main lights are also produced. The pixel module electronics comes from the ZKW electronics factory in Wiener Neustadt.

Super-flat projection module The powerful light output of the premium headlamp is achieved by the LED pixel module in combination with the innovative ForTIR element. The so -called ForTIR element light finger uses an apron to project parts of the low beams onto the road. It is a flat projection module that is only 13 millimeters tall and also becomes a design element in the main lamp. The headlamp headlight design, typical of Volvo, features a “Thor Hammer” shape, to which special attention has been paid to homogeneity. This design element is formed by a light guide and thick wall optics in the front, and does not clearly represent the C40 as a Volvo. “The combination of the 84-LED pixel module, ForTIR * element light finger and Thorhammer design is unique to Volvo,” explains Steger. ZKW equips both the Volvo C40 and XC40 models with premium LED headlights, using the same headlight module as the base.
