The $1.50 hot dog combo is still safe…for now.
Few chains in America are as tenacious and sensitive to keeping prices low as Costco. For their famous $4.99 rotisserie chickens, the wholesale club went so far as to build their own processing facility (which unfortunately has led to accusations of mistreatment of chickens). And as rumors spread earlier this year that the chain would increase the price of its food court hot dog-and-soda special, which has been $1.50 since the mid-1980s, a senior vice president of Costco spoke up. this in an earnings call, insisting, “We have no plans at this time to increase the price.”
But while the price of some items is completely banned, apparently not all items: Costco has reportedly increased the price of two other food court pillars.
Costco’s chicken casserole — basically chicken and cheese stuffed in a crust — has seen its price rise from $2.99 to $3.99, while the price of a 20-ounce soda has jumped 10 cents to $0.69. The Business Insider site noted the increases in Rochester, New York, before reaching out to workers in other locations who said these were changes nationwide. The Los Angeles Times also confirmed the price increases at multiple locations in the province of L.A. On the bright side, as promised, the price of the hot dog and soda deal has remained the same.
But even employees were apparently caught off guard. “I was surprised because they never do raises on the items,” Georgina Gomez, who works at a Costco in Los Angeles and has been with the company for 25 years, told the Times. “Once they’re out, that’s usually the price they keep.”
That said, price increases somewhere in the store were probably unavoidable. As Business Insider notes, food price inflation reached 14.6 percent for the month of May, according to the Numerator firm, with even wholesale clubs seeing inflation specifically spike to seven percent. Meanwhile, soft drink prices alone are reportedly 13 percent higher than last year, according to Wells Fargo. While Costco may produce its own hot dogs through the Kirkland brand, their soft drinks are supplied by Pepsi, meaning the price may be slightly out of their hands.
But keep in mind that Costco is the same company where one of its co-founders allegedly once threatened to kill its CEO if he raised hot dog prices. So yes, even a 10-cent increase in soda prices could potentially be considered a life-or-death decision.
