Zhang said the interdisciplinary design course provides a holistic introduction to the Internet of Things, while developing students’ core technology and communication skills through community engagement and real-world applications.
“The team took full advantage of the co-design process with Mutual Aid Tompkins to incorporate many features in terms of durability, cost and privacy for real-world implementations,” Zhang said. “They incorporated wiring and sensors into the structure – an excellent effort between the mechanical and electrical teams – so that food pickers would not be intimidated by the exposed electrical components.”
Zhang’s initial idea about the IoT was sown by a grant from the Academic Risk Fund by Cornell Atkinson in 2019. The following year, his team was awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation to design a public IoT network in New York State. Partial funding for the course was provided by the Cornell David M. Einhorn Center for Community Engagement and the group received support from the Shen Cornell Social Impact Fund to create a student project.
