Social justice and engineering mix well.

In a spring semester class, seven undergraduate students in Cornell engineering planned and built a pantry cabinet for outdoor food sharing for Tompkins Mutual Aid, hoping to take advantage. from chronic hunger among Tompkins County residents.

Cornell engineering students have built a state-of-the-art outdoor food-sharing cabinet to stop chronic hunger among local residents.

The bluewood cabinet in Lansing, New York, a sports technology that other communities may one day want: Can warn Tompkins volunteers of Mutual Aid about the need for more food when the shelves become empty, so they don’t have to manually check this pantry or the nearly 60 food cabinet the organization holds.

“It was different from other projects I did,” said Jerry Jin. “It simply came to our notice then. We worked with Mutual Aid Tompkins to understand what they needed and designed it ourselves. There were no pre-planned instructions. “

The pantry has three shelves – where donors leave food and those in need can take it freely – with weight sensors, weatherproof cabinetry, wiring for an electrical system and a spring door to hold the wildlife outside. It runs on solar power for up to two weeks, and employs Slack’s instant messaging communication tool to help the cabinet use a low-power radio (LPWAN Network Server) to send a message over the Internet to volunteers. Mutual Aid Tompkins.

“It was a fun process,” Jin said, “and it was something significant.”

Like many places in the United States, the relatively affluent food insecurity in Tompkins County (population of about 100,000) remains a difficult issue: There are 10,720 individuals with food insecurity, which is 10.4% of the population of the county, according to Tompkins Mutual Aid.

Mutual Aid Tompkins volunteers Theresa Fulton, Guven Ince and Elizabeth Blissett worked with students on the project. While the new and advanced pantry will help the community, “the technological improvement of the pantry will help volunteers keep this pantry better stored,” Fulton said. The project “made students aware of real-life problems and encouraged them to think about how to deal with them.”

Aid to the local community originated in the engineering class, “Introduction to the Internet of Things (IoT) – Technology and Engagement”, a senior-level graduation course taught by Max Zhang, a professor at Sibley School of Cornell Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Zhang is also the Faculty Director of Kathy Dwyer Marble and Curt Marble at the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability.

Zhang said the interdisciplinary design course provides a holistic introduction to the Internet of Things, while developing students’ core technology and communication skills through community engagement and real-world applications.

“The team took full advantage of the co-design process with Mutual Aid Tompkins to incorporate many features in terms of durability, cost and privacy for real-world implementations,” Zhang said. “They incorporated wiring and sensors into the structure – an excellent effort between the mechanical and electrical teams – so that food pickers would not be intimidated by the exposed electrical components.”

Zhang’s initial idea about the IoT was sown by a grant from the Academic Risk Fund by Cornell Atkinson in 2019. The following year, his team was awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation to design a public IoT network in New York State. Partial funding for the course was provided by the Cornell David M. Einhorn Center for Community Engagement and the group received support from the Shen Cornell Social Impact Fund to create a student project.

The community social justice aspect was a priority for the students. “It is very important to participate in measures to help other people in his community, especially in a society that may sometimes be deprived of care in the community,” said L.M. “Lemon” Nawrocki ’23. “Helping low-income people can be essential to their survival. I hate that there are members of my community who have to choose between bills, medical care, housing, food and other necessities. ”

In addition to Jin and Nawrocki, the team members were: Kiet Cao ’22; Alex Derry ’22; Kathy Nguyen ’22, Canwen “Tina” Zhang ’23 and Elaine Zheng ’23. For this project, the team won the annual McManus Design Award from the College of Engineering.

Zhang said: “The integration of research, teaching and this project has supported our effort to involve communities for real-world impact.”
