MONTGOMERY – Governor Kay Ivey announced Tuesday that the Alabama Innovation Corporation (Innovate Alabama) is opening applications for the Innovate Alabama Supplementary Grant Program. Recipients of the Alabama-based and Phase II-based Federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants are eligible to apply for up to $250,000 in additional funding.

In addition to helping leading entrepreneurs and innovators in the state, deploying these funds will grow the Alabama economy by stimulating research and commercialization, developing exportable products and services, and creating and maintaining high-paying jobs in skilled jobs.

“The Alabama Innovate Supplemental Grant Program is our state’s newest way of creating an attractive business environment for pioneering ideas that will change our world,” said Governor Ivey. “The people of Alabama have the courage, determination, and creativity to bring these ideas to life, and with the additional funding of Innovate Alabama, these small businesses will take their ideas from concept to commercialization.”

According to a 2021 report by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Alabama is now among the 20 states that have implemented strong additional grants for Phase I and Phase II SBIR/STTR winners.

“Regularly accessible capital is one of the greatest needs of our state’s entrepreneurs,” said Alabama Finance Director and Alabama Innovation Corporation Chairman Bill Poole. “Innovate Alabama wants to bridge connections and resources like this grant program to support innovative small businesses that produce transformative research and technology.”

“The Alabama Innovate Supplemental Grant Program is the product of a deliberate collaboration between the Alabama innovation ecosystem and my colleagues in the Alabama Legislature,” said State Senator Greg Reed, President of Pro Tempore of the Alabama State Senate and Vice Chair of the Alabama Innovation Company. “We passed legislation last year to pave the way for this program, and I’m proud to see it come to fruition.”

Eligible applicants have an active Phase I or Phase II SBIR or STTR grant. Phase I recipients are eligible to apply for 50% of their award up to $100,000. Phase II recipients are eligible to apply for 50% of their award up to $250,000. The Innovate Alabama Additional Grants Program awards are non-dilutive, meaning businesses receive money without giving up their company stock.

“Small businesses that have been awarded SBIR/STTR grants from federal agencies benefit from their technology that has been subject to expert scientific review,” said Dr. Michael Chambers, Associate Vice President for Research at the University of South Alabama and Member of the Alabama Enterprise Innovation Council. “Alabama’s additional funding program is a great way for our state to grow our economy by investing in local technology that may have a global impact.”
