Moscow/LondonLego is indefinitely closing its shop in Russia and laying off its 90 Moscow-based employees due to “extensive disruptions” in the country, the Danish toymaker said on Tuesday.
Lego has terminated its contract with franchisee Inventive Retail Group (IRG), which owned and operated 81 stores on behalf of Lego.
IRG, which also operated stores in Russia for Western brands such as Nike (NKE) and Samsung (SSNLF), said earlier Tuesday that the contract with Lego had been terminated.
“The LEGO Group has decided to indefinitely suspend commercial operations in Russia given the ongoing extensive disruptions in the operating environment,” said a LEGO spokesman.
An IRG spokesman said: “Our company will continue to operate as an expert in the toy design and development category.”
Lego suspended shipments to Russia in March and announced in June it would temporarily freeze some stores due to supply issues.
The Russian edition of Inc. Magazine reported earlier Tuesday that Lego is indefinitely suspending commercial activities in Russia and terminating its contract with IRG.
