Los Angeles: In theory, the backdrop for Selling Sunset would be the last place dark-loving vampires would seek to settle. Even Her Majesty Buffy Summers, the eponymous Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has moved from the California metropolis to fight bigger and worse crimes in Sunnydale. But in the trailer for Netflix’s new action-comedy Day Shift, LA is the center of a thriving community of hidden vampires – and hunting the undead is big business.

Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco, and Snoop Dogg star in the new film “The Guys Who Taught John Wick to Kick Ass” (director J.J. Perry has done stunt doubles for the John Wick series and co-writer Shay Hatten is a veteran of that franchise, plus the series director Chad Stahelski is on board here as producer.) The film follows Foxx as a blue-collar father trying to provide for his daughter, and the only difference between Foxx’s character and John Mellencamp’s average hero is that Foxx earns a living. as a vampire hunter, a gruesome occupation he keeps hidden behind the front of a swimming pool cleaning business.

Foxx’s choice can be dangerous, but it’s financially sound. Not only are there apparently a dozen vampires in the Sun State; they are absolute cash cows. With hefty bills for his daughter’s braces and tuition on the horizon (and the possibility of her and her mother moving to Florida looming), Foxx sets out to raise $10,000 in a week by eliminating as many leeches as he can. . “You know what I see when I see a vampire? A big ol’ dollar sign,” Foxx encourages a shaky Dave Franco, who wears glasses and a neck brace to play the meekest of sidekicks (seriously, it’s only halfway through the three-minute trailer that Franco’s character wets himself with terror).

The vampires of Day Shift are far from the sultry southern thugs of True Blood or the porcelain-skinned tramps of Twilight (Foxx’s character makes this joke himself). These vampires have bodies that writhe a-la-Abbey-Lee-Kershaw in Old, and they explode into dust once decapitated or staked in the heart. If anything, the vampires of Day Shift are more closely following those who populated SoCal than Buffy The Vampire Slayer: woefully out of touch with modern fashion and insatiably bloodthirsty, but ultimately just trying to survive each day in Los Angeles. – with the curtains closed, of course.

Day Shift will be available to stream on Netflix starting August 12.

Netflix lost more than subscribers in 2022. It lost prestige, employees and $185 billion in value. Last week, Netflix really was a joke.
