13: The Musical began as an actual musical on Broadway from 2008-2009 and is now heading to Netflix. This is one of the few musicals that was released as a Netflix Original Movie. The others include Tick, Tick…BOOM!, Diana The Musical, and Matilda The Musical.
The new family comedy follows 12-year-old Evan Goldman, who has just moved from New York City to a small town in Indiana after his parents’ divorce. As you can imagine, it’s a bit of a culture shock.
But with his 13th birthday just around the corner, Evan is determined to figure out the social dynamics at his new school, make a bunch of friends, and most importantly, have a Bar Mitzvah that everyone will remember.
13: The Musical stars Josh Peck, Rhea Perlman, Debra Messing, Eli Golden, Peter Hermann, Michela Luci, Frankie McNellis, Luke Islam, and JD McCrary. It was also written by Jason Robert Brown, Dan Elish, and Robert Horn, the writers of the Broadway musical. This is always a good sign.

13: The Musical arrives on Netflix Friday, August 12, 2022 at 12:01 a.m. PT/3:01 a.m. ET. The movie is about 90 minutes long so it is the perfect length for children and adults. Because let’s be honest, we adults don’t live with long attention spans either.
It will be interesting to see how the cast performs in this film version since none of them were in the original Broadway show. The original cast featured stars like Elizabeth Gillies and Ariana Grande, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like anyone from the Broadway cast will even make a cameo.
