Netflix has brought back a bunch of classic Nickelodeon shows for the summer of 2022, allowing all fans to enjoy the nostalgia. With competition between streaming services skyrocketing, titles are being snapped up left and right. And now, Nickelodeon can enjoy a little bit of the Netflix spotlight with these series added to their list.
No one can seem to get enough nostalgia these days, with many looking to media from simpler times, including the movies and TV shows that shaped them into who they are today. These Netflix additions feature some of the most beloved Nickelodeon shows of the last few decades, and others tie up a few loose ends in some old classics.
Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide (2004)
Ned’s Declassified Guide to School Survival is a favorite among many millennials and Gen Z kids. Starring Devon Werkheiser, Lindsey Shaw, Daniel Curtis Lee, and Daran Norris, the show is told from Ned’s perspective as he provides viewers with his guidance for surviving high school .
Each season followed the sophomore year of high school as the kids struggled through 6th, 7th and 8th grade, absurd and realistic antics. The show came to its natural conclusion in 2007 when the students finished their last year of high school and prepared to move on to high school. Kenan & Kel (1996)
Kenan & Kel, a spin-off series of the 1994 sketch show All That, is a series to which actors Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell credit much of their success. Although the two have only worked together a handful of times since then, their brotherhood and antics are something that will keep them together for eternity in the minds of all nostalgic 90s Nickelodeon kids.
A staple of Nickelodeon’s first era, Kenan & Kel is a wonderful addition to Netflix’s Nickelodeon lineup. On the same subject : Amazon Prime Video releases the long-awaited trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The first two of the show’s four seasons are now available to stream and should be around for a while.
The Fairly OddParents (2001)
The Fairly OddParents was a Nickelodeon icon for the 16 years and 10 seasons it was on the air. On the same subject : The besieged Netflix has reportedly cut its workforce once again. The show’s pilot, which actually aired in 1998 as a series of seven-minute shorts on the older Nicktoon, Oh Yeah! The cartoons allowed the story and characters to be fleshed out before it found its place online in 2001.
The story took many places in its later seasons, but The Fairly OddParents at its core revolved around 10-year-old Timmy Turner and his magical fairies who granted every wish as long as it fell within the fairies’ code of conduct, “Da Rules.” It was a highly regarded series for most of its run, and the first three seasons can now be found on Netflix.
Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie (2017)
Although the jungle movie was originally planned as the finale to the 1996 hit show Hey Arnold!, a dispute between the studio and creator Craig Bartlett led to it being scrapped and the series abruptly ended in 2004. After more than a decade of petitions and upset by devoted fans , deals were made between the original cast members and the network, and the film returned.
The film aired on Nickelodeon in 2017 and was recently added to Netflix for reruns, as it was met with thunderous applause and several requests for a full sequel. The film not only satisfied fans by answering burning questions and seamlessly blending modern touches with classic aspects of the show, but also allowed old fans of the show to be a part of creating this final addition.
iCarly (2007)
A smash hit in the 2000s, iCarly followed teenage Carly’s rise to internet stardom alongside her best friends, Sam and Freddie, through their quirky title web series iCarly. The show made an impressive prediction about how internet fame works long before it became the norm, and the show became a television staple in the minds of all 2000s kids.
Starring Miranda Cosgrove, Nathan Kress, Jennette McCurdy and Jerry Trainor, the series has since been rebooted as the adult sitcom iCarly on Paramount+ for original fans, and the first two seasons of the original series are available on Netflix.
Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus (2019)
Invader Zim originally aired in 2001 and quickly became a hallmark of Nickelodeon’s lineup during its five years on the network. The series followed the alien Zim in his attempts to infiltrate Earth and plan the planet’s demise, much to the chagrin of his planet’s leaders who merely sent him on the mission as a busybody.
Although Zim was canceled due to poor ratings, the series gained popularity as reruns aired for the next decade, and in 2017, a collaboration between Netflix and Nickelodeon was officially announced. The TV movie was released in 2019 and was highly praised by critics and original fans. The film is made for great entertainment, not only in the details for original Invader Zim fans to notice, but also in the plot, execution and performance for new fans.
Zoey 101 (2005)
Starring a young Jamie Lynn Spears, Zoey 101 was the story of teenage Zoey and her friends as they try to navigate life at a California high school, Pacific Coast Academy. The show, in its classic Nickelodeon style from the early 2000s, made a huge impact on its viewers, burning its humor into everyone’s minds and creating the ideal vision of boarding school for years to come.
The show lasted for three years and four seasons, and ended in 2008 with the grand finale. The first two seasons of the show were added to Netflix this June and have been trending ever since.
All That (1994)
All That introduced a whole new genre of comedy to children’s television programming, Nickelodeon’s very own “SNL for Kids.” The show has catapulted many children and teenagers into the limelight and created lifelong careers for people including Kenan Thompson and Amanda Bynes, and included many other notable names and faces along the way.
The series ran from 1994 to 2000, was rebooted from 2002 to 2005, and was recently rebooted from 2019 to the end of 2020. The first two seasons of the original broadcast are currently on Netflix.
Big Time Rush (2009)
Big Time Rush began in 2009 and has since launched the incredibly successful collaborative careers of actor-singers, Kendall, Logan, James and Carlos. The sitcom centered around four boys who found their place as a Los Angeles boy band, and ended when the boys broke up to each pursue independent careers. In their entirety, all four seasons are currently available for streaming.
In addition to the entire cast having successful individual careers following Big Time Rush, the boys have since reunited to make music once again. They released new singles to the applause of their old crowd, and have since gone on tour, touring as the boy band they were over 10 years ago. Big Time Movie (2012) can also be found on Netflix.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
One of the few cartoons that can stand the test of time, Avatar: The Last Airbender made waves when it was added to Netflix in May 2020. With a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s a show loved by both the kids who grew up on it and the adults watching next to them. Dealing with heavy subject matter, yet friendly to all, A:TLA is universally regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time.
Since premiering in 2005, the series has since inspired a spin-off series called The Legend of Korra, the Avatar Kyoshi book series, the web series Republic City, multiple live-action storylines, graphic novel sequels, and plenty of parties. . All three seasons, along with The Legend of Korra, are available (and often trending) on Netflix.
Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling (2019)
After the series ended in 1996, Rock’s modern life received an even more modern reboot in 2017. Conceived as an addition to the story and the conclusion of the series, the television movie perfectly updated the life of everyone’s favorite animated wallaby and friend.
With a brilliant and hilarious moral, Static Cling not only tied up loose ends, but gave audiences the seamless conclusion they never knew they needed, developed characters beyond belief, and mocked its existence as a belated addition to a 20-year-old show. While the show stands the test of time without this addition, this Netflix-Nickelodeon original movie only enhanced what the show has always been.
