In Netflix’s vast library of shows, a wide selection of international programming has introduced audiences around the world to some of their new favorite series. One such title is the South African comedy hit How to Ruin Christmas, in which Tumi Busisiwe Lurayi spends a chaotic holiday with her family. The series was recently announced for a third season, but that news now comes with an unfortunate caveat as Lurayi has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 36.

Her death was announced via Instagram, courtesy of Busisiwe Lurayi’s talent agency Eye Media Artists. The cause of death was not given, as the statement said the official autopsy report had not yet been released. Lurayi’s sudden death on Sunday came as a shock as the actress died at her home.

Outside of her stardom on Netflix, the actress was known for her roles in several other South African series. Her most extensive role was Thandi in the show Wild At Heart, which followed an English family who moved to a reserve in this very country. American television also saw Lurayi make an appearance, as she was a guest star in the 2006 episode of ER titled “There Are No Angels Here.” Fans of the show, in particular, are still mourning another loss involving the NBC hit, following the recent loss of UR star Mary Mara.

Award-winning talent, Busisiwe Lurayi has taken home two SAFTA Golden Horn awards in her career; her most recent win was for Best Actress in How to Ruin Christmas in 2021. As both seasons of the Netflix series have seen Lurayi’s protagonist Tumi anchor, carry and sometimes cause the madness that engulfs the Sella family over the course of three to four seasons of episodes, this became her latest claim to fame.

It’s no surprise why when one watches the trailer for the first season of How to Ruin Christmas: A Wedding (opens in a new tab), they immediately see the late star’s talents on full display. You can see for yourself in the video below:

There’s no word yet on how Lurayi’s death will affect the production of How to Ruin Christmas: The Baby Shower or if it will knock the series out of a potential 2022 Netflix TV slot. time. Regardless of the outcome, the series will not be the same without Busisiwa Lurayi’s comedic timing and heartfelt performance.

It is now more important to remember Busisiwa Lurayi as a shining talent who shone brightly on and off the silver screen. Her memory will do the same and we at CinemaBlend would like to extend our sincere condolences to her friends and family at this unfortunate time of grief.
